The Foregut

Knowledge concerning oesophageal pathophysiology has until recently lagged far behind that of the pathophysiology of other portions of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract for reasons that still remain unclear. Yet, it is the fact that, at least until the last few decades, interest in the oesophagus was primarily based on pathologic anatomy. Even today, much remains to be learnt on the pathophysiology of oesophageal disease. The recent development of methods of studying both morphology and function of the oesophagus has resulted in a better understanding of normal and abnormal oesophageal patterns with a corresponding improvement in treatment, which is now physiologically, rather than anatomicall...

Eosinophilic Esophagitis

As Guest Editor, Dr. Glenn Furuta has assembled an extraordinary group of highly accomplished individual players-pediatric and adult gastroenterologists, endoscopists, and surgeons, pathologists, immunologists, and allergists--to produce a state-of-the-art issue devoted to Eosinophilic Esophagitis. This disease is complex, and in its varying presentations in children and adults, may have more than one pathogenesis. One thing is certain: eosinophilic esophagitis is an important disease that causes considerable morbidity in those afflicted and is a major cause of esophageal symptoms, particularly dysphagia. Eosinophilic esophagitis is increasing in frequency like bronchial asthma, to which it has been compared. The relationship of eosinophilic esophagitis to gastroesophageal reflux disease remains poorly defined in some cases. Chronic eosinophilic esophagitis seems to lead to fibrosis in some patients, and eosinophilic esophagitis has been linked to the Schatzki ring long associated with hiatal hernia and GERD. These issues, as well as a strong emphasis on current approaches to diagnosis and therapy are presented.

Endosonography in Gastroenterology

Since endoscopic ultrasonography was first used approximately 15 years ago, it has become a valuable adjunct tool, supplementing endoscopy, conventional ultrasound, and CT for a large number of specific indications. Features of this book include: physical laws and technology as necessary for an understanding of the imaging technique; indications and clinical value of the method for specific indications; examination technique in normal findings as the basis of evaluation: for example, passage through the esophagus and stomach are shown step by step using more than 30 illustrations. All original photographs are explained with correlated line drawings, aiding the unexperienced examiner to interpret images with confidence. Written by authors who were pioneers in the method, and who have established an international reputation.

The need for women's leadership in gastroenterology has resulted in an increasing demand for gender-specific educational programs. In 2002, the first forum on women's issues in gastroenterology was held in an attempt to educate physicians on disease processes that are specific to women. Additional educational programs are needed to emphasize the unique challenges in performing endoscopy on woman. This edition is divided into three sections and focuses on endoscopic topics that are specific to women. The first section encompasses the challenges of performing various endoscopic procedures in the pregnant woman. The second section describes gender-specific abnormalities of the upper gastrointestinal tract. The last section includes the diverse pathologic and endoscopic abnormalities that are seen in the lower gastrointestinal tract of women. Keywords: Endoscopy, Pregnancy, Gastric-bypass, volvulus, autoimmune, rectal procidentia, Rapunzel's syndrome, microscopic colitis, NSAIDs, endoscopic ultrasound, ERCP, colonoscop
