The First Edition of the Letters of Paul

We call them “the Letters of Paul”. However, who really wrote them, and why? The fascinating quest for an answer to this question takes us to Ephesus, one of the most important harbour cities of the Roman Empire, in order to get a clearer picture through him of the anonymous editors who edited the first edition of what would later, so inappropriately, be called the letters of Paul. These first editors saved Paul from oblivion, but often ignored what he had actually said. What did they want to achieve with their publication? Who added the anti-Jewish and misogynistic texts and who added the beautiful song about the praise of love? This book offers a spectacular reconstruction of the first edition of Paul’s letters. It removes two thousand years of Christian encrustation on the surviving texts, and produces a unique reconstruction and critical translation from the Greek of the first edition of the first four letters of Paul.

Philosophy in Late Antiquity

Philosophy in Late Antiquity

Late Antiquity seems to retreat in silence. However, Nietzsche drew attention to the fact that what we know about antique philosophy are not the voices of Plato or Aristotle that once sounded in Athens, nor those of Cicero or Seneca in Rome. They have come to us as perceived by the authors of the waning of the classical world, the world of Late Antiquity. This was a world about to perish, characterised by the decline of the Roman Empire and its legal system, and the tensions between the philosophy and paganism of Antiquity and Christianity. The medieval and our contemporary world are based on the works of Late Antiquity. This book discusses the disappearance of the foundation of philosophy: the knowledge and use of the Greek language; the birth of time as being merely temporary; the fall of the flesh; the role of women in the period; and the growing awareness of the approach of death. The boundaries of being become more emphatic and closer.

A Blessed Life

Numerous laypersons have experienced that the guidelines of Saint Benedict's Rule offer inspiring and realistic ways toward a blessed life, aiming at the growth and flourishing of persons and communities in which they live and work. As in his previous and successful book, The Rule of Benedict for Beginners,Will Derkse in this sequel is searching for those basic attitudes and virtues that characterize Benedictine spirituality, making them available for those living and working outside a monastery. The cultivation of silence and restrained speech; the dedication to work and study; the importance of humility (which is the courage to serve); the cultivation of hospitality, care, and stewardship;...

The Age of Van Gogh

  • Categories: Art

This is a comprehensive selection of the work of Vincent Van Gogh together with significant paintings by some 40 of his Dutch contemporaries. Although Van Gogh himself knew few of the artists working in his own time, he was influenced by the cultural climate prevailing in the Netherlands during the 1880s, and, in the 1890s, he in turn inspired some of most talented painters of the younger generation.

Gezegend leven

Temporality and Eternity

Temporality and Eternity

Is time a creation of God? How can God be considered eternal, if he is responsible for the existence of time? Is God temporal or is he timeless? The relationship between God and time has been an object of inquiry in philosophical and theological traditions around the world for centuries. This volume takes up these and other questions, presenting a range of answers not only as brought forth in European philosophical traditions and in early Christianity, Judaism and Islam, but also positions taken by mediaeval Indian theologians and in the influential traditions of early Buddhism. Traditionally, discussions have focused on questions such as whether time is a necessary concomitant of God’s existence, or whether time should be identified with God. But there is a further question: did these traditions develop their own unrelated and independent view of God and time? Or are there similarities in their reflections? This volume, with contributions of scholars from various relevant fields, offers a novel approach to these inquiries. When taken as a whole, it provides new momentum to contemplation on an age-old enigma.
