Natural Gas Prices Under the Russia-Ukraine Conflict
This paper examines the causal impact of the recent Russia-Ukraine conflict on natural gas prices around the world using a variant DID (difference-in-differences) approach. Our estimates suggest that all prices in the four major international natural gas markets, namely Title Transfer Facility (TTF), National Balancing Point (NBP), Japan-Korean Marker (JKM), and Henry Hub (HH), increased significantly after the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine crisis. The results are robust to alternative new DID methods, i.e., SDID and PCDID. Moreover, European and Asian markets (TTF, NBP, and JKM) are more vulnerable to the conflict than the U.S. market (HH), with notable heterogeneities.
