Voices of Supporters
This book addresses an under-researched area within populism studies: the discourse of supporters of populist parties. Taking the 2019 European elections as their case study, the authors analyse how supporters in eleven different countries construct identities and voting motivations on social media. The individual chapters comprise a range of methods to investigate data from different social media platforms, defining populism as a political strategy and/or practice, realised in discourse, that is based on a dichotomy between “the people”, who are unified by their will, and an out-group whose actions are not in the interest of the people, with a leader safeguarding the interests of the people against the out-group. The book identifies what motivates people to vote for populist parties, what role national identities and values play in those motivations, and how the social media postings of populist parties are recontextualised in supporters’ comments to serve as a voting motivation.
Religious and National Discourses
The editors of this volume have combined their expertise in discourse, contradiction, minority and diversity studies to suggest a change of perspective from categorisations into societal minorities and majorities towards an analysis of marginalising and centralising discourses. For this purpose, we have gathered interdisciplinary-minded authors from linguistics, literary and religious studies, political and historical sciences. Their contributions focus on contradictions of religious and national belonging as well as intersections of religion and nation in many different regions of the world from the 18th century until today. While illustrating the diversity and contradictions of religious and national belonging across time and space, the chapters of the book contribute to an understanding of the dynamics of questions of belonging and the associated constant renegotiations of power within these discursive processes.
Metaphor in Socio-Political Contexts
Metaphor studies is a vibrant and fascinating field. The present book brings together the work of influential researchers analyzing metaphor empirically from Critical Socio-Cognitive perspectives (CSCDA). The case studies focus on the role of metaphor as a powerful strategy for the creation of specific world views and ideological frames, as well as for their contestation in current crises.
Vulnerability
This collection presents studies on a wide range of discursive positions marked by vulnerability and investigates the functions of (self-)positioning actors as vulnerable in contemporary social discourses. As a phenomenon that manifests itself in different social arenas, vulnerable positions and instances of (self-)positioning indicate various crisis situations on a broad spectrum of phenomena, of manifestations and implications. Starting from the assumption that vulnerable (self-)positioning and stance-taking is manifested at the level of discursive practices, performative processes and material achievements, the contributors describe a series of mechanisms of staging vulnerability in a wide range of manifestations: among them physical, psychological, social, sexual and gender, linguistic, and institutional vulnerability.

Der Krieg in der Ukraine fordert weitgehende politische Entscheidungen und Weichenstellungen. In Deutschland steht hierfür sinnbildlich das Kanzler-Wort von der Zeitenwende, das keineswegs leere Phrase ist. Immerhin steht in unmittelbarem Zusammenhang mit ihm nicht zuletzt der massive Ausbau der Bundeswehr, und es bildet die Grundlage für umfangreiche Waffenlieferungen in ein Kriegsgebiet in einem Maße, das wenige Wochen vor dem Ausbruch dieses Krieges wohl kaum ohne einen vehementen öffentlichen Aufschrei möglich gewesen wäre. Gleich wie man politisch zu diesen schwierigen Entscheidungen steht – die Aufgabe dieser Zeitschrift für Sprachkritik und Sprachkultur ist es, in solchen Momenten einen aufmerksamen und kritischen Blick auf den Diskurs zu werfen, der sie begleitet und umgibt. Die in diesem Themenheft versammelten essayistischen Notizen von Sprachwissenschaftlerinnen und Sprachwissenschaftlern zu unserer unmittelbarsten Gegenwart vermitteln eindrücklich, wie groß die Bedeutung von Sprache ist und stets war im Kontext von Krieg und der Sehnsucht nach seinem Ende, nach "Frieden".

Humboldt and the modern German university
This book is about the idea of the university in modern Germany. Its primary focus is how the Humboldtian tradition was transformed and how it gave direction to debates around higher education. By combining approaches from intellectual history, conceptual history and the history of knowledge, the study investigates the ways in which Humboldt’s ideas have been appropriated for various purposes in different historical contexts and epochs. Ultimately, it shows that Humboldt’s ideals are not timeless – they are historical phenomena and have always been determined by the predicaments and issues of the day. Nevertheless, many of the key concepts and fundamental ideas have endured throughout the twentieth century, though they have been interpreted in different ways.
