In Painting Architecture: Jiehua in Yuan China, 1271–1368, Leqi Yu has conducted comprehensive research on jiehua or ruled-line painting, a unique painting genre in fourteenth-century China. This genre relies on tools such as rulers to represent architectural details and structures accurately. Such technical consideration and mechanical perfection linked this painting category with the builder’s art, which led to Chinese elites’ belittlement and won Mongol patrons’ admiration. This book selects the most outstanding journal articles from the Chinese version of Foreign Affairs Review written by prestigious Chinese scholars in recent years. Parameterized complexity is currently a thriving field in complexity theory and algorithm design. A significant part of the success of the field can be attributed to Michael R. Fellows. This Festschrift has been published in honor of Mike Fellows on the occasion of his 60th birthday. It contains 20 papers that showcase the important scientific contributions of this remarkable man, describes the history of the field of parameterized complexity, and also reflects on other parts of Mike Fellows’s unique and broad range of interests, including his work on the popularization of discrete mathematics for young children. The volume contains several surveys that introduce the reader to the field of parameterized complexity and discuss important notions, results, and developments in this field.

The rich, multi-faceted and multi-disciplinary field of matching-based market design is an active and important one due to its highly successful applications with economic and sociological impact. Its home is economics, but with intimate connections to algorithm design and operations research. With chapters contributed by over fifty top researchers from all three disciplines, this volume is unique in its breadth and depth, while still being a cohesive and unified picture of the field, suitable for the uninitiated as well as the expert. This thesis explores and exploits structure inherent in voting problems. Some of these structures are found in the preferences of the voters, such as the domain restrictions which have been widely studied in social choice theory [ASS02, ASS10]. Others can be expressed as quantifiable measures (or parameters) of the input, which make them accessible to a parameterized complexity analysis [Cyg+15, DF13, FG06, Nie06]. This thesis is concerned with investigating elements of computational social choice in the light of real-world applications. We contribute to a better understanding of the areas of fair allocation and multiwinner voting. For both areas, inspired by real-world scenarios, we propose several new notions and extensions of existing models. Then, we analyze the complexity of answering the computational questions raised by the introduced concepts. To this end, we look through the lens of parameterized complexity. In this interdisciplinary study, the authors argue that Hong Kong should strengthen the mobility of its population. Flexible positioning at the margins has made it a node in the crossroads of empires, trading communities, industrial assembly lines, and now global finance, consumption and media. This essential characteristic, Hong Kong as a 'space of flow,' has always been the source of its success.The book shows that a porous border in fact has been maintained in the post-war years. Unique institutions developed over the century have absorbed waves of immigrants entering from China. However, the study warns that the population is now aging when compared with other world cities and China's fast growing urban centers. Only with a massive input of young, educated, and diverse human talents can Hong Kong remain a vibrant portal for the creative fusion of capital, goods, services, cultural horizons, aspirations and civic energies.
In traditional service architectures that follow the service statelessness principle, the state is primarily held in the data tier. Here, service operators utilize tailored storage solutions to guarantee the required availability; even though failures can occur at any time. This centralized approach to store and process an application’s state in the data tier implies that outages of the entire tier cannot be tolerated.
