In celebration of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary’s fiftieth anniversary, its former Academic Dean and longtime historian, Garth M. Rosell, was commissioned to write a history of the school. The merger of two much older institutions, the Conwell School of Theology founded in 1884 in Philadelphia and Gordon Divinity School founded in 1889 in Boston, created an institution that since its own founding in 1969 has become one of the largest theological seminaries in the world. With more than ten thousand graduates and nearly two thousand students studying on four campuses from Hamilton and Boston in the north to Charlotte and Jacksonville in the south, the seminary has become an important center for theological education in the evangelical tradition. A Charge to Keep explores the seminary's history from its founding by Billy Graham, Harold John Ockenga, and J. Howard Pew to the installation of its seventh president, Scott Sunquist.
Constructing a Theology of Prayer: Andrew Fuller’s (1754–1815) Belief and Practice of Prayer fills a lacuna in Fuller studies. Bryant’s work is the first full treatment of Fuller’s theology of prayer, demonstrating the vitality of prayer for Fuller’s ministry and theological reflection. Bryant constructs Fuller’s theology of prayer through a systematic analysis of six major doctrines: the doctrine of God, the Son, the Spirit, Humanity, the Church, and Last Things. Each chapter explores both how Fuller’s doctrine influences his belief and practice of prayer, and how belief and practice of prayer influence doctrine. The study convincingly demonstrates how each major doctrine finds prayer as its corollary. As Fuller states, “Holy practice has a necessary dependence on sacred principle.”
This Festschrift for historian Gerald L. The Jonathan Edwards Renaissance is fully underway, with an increased emphasis on Edwards as an exegete and interpreter of Scripture. In this work, Brian Borgman explores Edwards's exegetical, hermeneutical, and theological treatment of the book of Genesis. This study gives special attention to Edwards's hermeneutics and exegesis of Genesis, his pastoral methods for preaching it, and his theological development of the meaning of "the image of God." The result is a fruitful study on Edwards's interaction with the first book of the Bible.
