Determinants of synaptic information transfer: From Ca2+ binding proteins to Ca2+ signaling domains

The cytoplasmic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) is a key determinant of neuronal information transfer and processing. It controls a plethora of fundamental processes, including transmitter release and the induction of synaptic plasticity. This enigmatic second messenger conveys its wide variety of actions by binding to a subgroup of Ca2+ binding proteins (CaBPs) known as “Ca2+ sensors”. Well known examples of Ca2+ sensors are Troponin-C in skeletal muscle, Synaptotagmin in presynaptic terminals, and Calmodulin (CaM) in all eukaryotic cells. Since the levels of [Ca2+]i directly influence the potency of Ca2+ sensors, the Ca2+ concentration is tightly controlled by several mechanisms incl...

Application of genetically encoded indicators to mammalian central nervous system

Genetically encoded indicators emerged as promising tools for cell type-specific and chronic recording of neuronal population activity. Since publication of the first prototypical genetically encoded Ca2+ indicators (Cameleons) in 1997, we have witnessed remarkable evolution of the field, with rapid improvement of indicator performance as well as expanded application to many model organisms in the neuroscience community. Challenges still remain, however, concerning the mammalian central nervous system: limited sensitivity of indicators to subtle changes in activity, slow signal kinetics, cytotoxicity after a long-term and high-level expression of indicators, and variable performance across c...

Wilms’ Tumor

This book covers all aspects of Wilms’ tumor, the second most typical solid tumor in children. Its potential for complete cure underscores correct management of this tumor. To achieve this goal, the book aims to provide all necessary details for practicing Pediatric surgeons, Oncologists, Pediatricians, Urologists, and Medical students. Topics ranging from epidemiology, etiology, pathology, clinical features, diagnostic methods, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy to cutting-edge inventions are described in great detail.Detailed descriptions of surgical techniques and their nuances will greatly benefit surgeons and surgical residents. Importantly, all the chapters are written by authors who have first-hand experience with clinical management. Thus the text ensures the practical application of theoretical details.

Baptismal and Marriage Records, Rev. John Waldschmidt

Rev. Waldschmidt's entries, which pertain to the congregations of Cocalico (Swamp), Weiseichenland (formerly Sebastian Reicher's Church), Modecreek, and Zeltenreich, are arranged in four separate alphabetical groupings. The first part, baptismal records, gives the name of the child, parents' names, date of birth and date of baptism, and the names of sponsors. Marriages come next, and they state the name of the bride and groom, the date of the marriage, and, frequently, the name(s) of the parents. Each marriage is listed twice, alphabetically according to the surname of both the bride and groom. The third section of the book lists the various communion services performed by Rev. Waldschmidt, with the names of the communicants. Finally, a separate listing of brides and grooms from official Pennsylvania marriage licenses signed by the pastor between 1784-1786 concludes the volume.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the biological basis of renal tumors in childhood and the clinical approaches to their treatment. Recent advances in our understanding of the molecular genetics of Wilms and other renal tumors are placed in their clinical context, including the differing treatment approaches of immediate surgery or pre-operative chemotherapy. The challenges in applying this knowledge to improve risk stratification and to incorporate biologically targeted agents into front-line therapy are discussed. All of the authors are experts from Europe and North America and the book has been written specifically as an easy reference for the practising clinician and the research scientist. It lays the basis for understanding the future direction of clinical and translational research to improve outcomes in patients with childhood renal tumors and will prove indispensable for those treating or researching into these diseases.
