Christianity As Mystical Fact was compiled from a series of lectures Rudolf Steiner gave in 1902. It was an attempt to explain the mystical qualities of Christianity and it's evolution from pre-Christian times to the resurrection. The book has become one of Steiner's most well known works and it gives us a deeper and richer understanding of the esoteric roots and meaning of Christianity. Steiner, not satisfied with scratching the surface of traditional Christianity, sought to unearth it's mysteries, and his words are reminiscent of a latter day near-death experiencer when he writes in chapter 2; "He acknowledges the existence of the gods, but knows that the ordinary ideas about them do not s...

Rudolf Joseph Lorenz Steiner (1861 - 1925) was an Austrian philosopher, social thinker, architect and esotericist. He founded Anthroposophy, as an esoteric philosophy growing out of European transcendentalism and with links to Theosophy. After the First World War, Steiner worked with educators, farmers, doctors, and other professionals to develop Waldorf education, biodynamic agriculture, and anthroposophical medicine. In 1899 Steiner experienced a life altering encounter with Christ. Steiner describes Christ's mission as "The being of Christ is central to all religions, though called by different names by each. Every religion is valid and true for the time and cultural context in which it was born. Historical forms of Christianity need to be transformed considerably in our times in order to meet the on-going evolution of humanity." Christianity As Mystical Fact explains how Christianity grew out of pre-Christian mysteries. Steiner goes on to discuss the Gospels, the Lazarus miracle, the Apocalypse of St. John, Jesus and his historical background.

Christ and the Human Soul

4 lectures, Norrköping July 1914 (CW 155) In these four remarkable lectures, Steiner contends that Christ has been working on the behalf of humankind since the very beginnings of human existence, long before the inception of Christianity. Steiner indicates how--in the ancient mystery schools and in the miraculous events depicted in the Old Testament--the guiding hand of Christ shaped and developed human cognition. The ultimate divine intervention took place with the incarnation of Christ in human form, which culminated in the Mystery of Golgotha. Through this grand event, the opportunity arose for every soul to develop immortal individuality and "I" awareness. Steiner clarifies the difficult concepts of sin, guilt, and karma and explains the meaning of "forgiveness of sins" and the "resurrection of the body." Looking forward to future great periods of evolution, he speaks of the separation of humanity into the two races of good and evil and describes how Christ will continue to work in that critical time of human development.

Renewing Christian Religious Work

6 lectures and 2 discussions in Stuttgart, June 12-16, 1921 (CW 342) The lectures and discussions presented in First Steps in Christian Religious Renewal make up the first of the five "Priest Courses." They record the first steps of the remarkable journey taken in 1921 by a small group of dedicated souls who, out of their own inner needs and guided by Rudolf Steiner, sought a path to Christian religious renewal. Addressing the group with warm intimacy, Steiner frames their task not primarily in theological terms, but as a need for a renewing "the religious," or "the working of the religious element as such." For this, the sermon (or how we speak) is central, for today we must use language in...

The Bhagavad Gita and the West

5 lectures, Cologne, Dec. 28, 1912 - Jan. 1, 1913 (CW 142) 9 lectures, Helsinki, May 28 - June 5, 1913 (CW 146) 1 lecture, Basel, Sept. 19, 1912 (CW 139) This combination of two volumes in Rudolf Steiner's Collected Works presents Steiner's profound engagement with Hindu thought and, above all, the Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita as they illuminate Western Christian esotericism. In his masterly introduction, Robert McDermott, a longtime student of Rudolf Steiner, as well as Hindu spirituality, explores the complex ways in which the "Song of the Lord," or Bhagavad Gita, has been understood in East and West. He shows how Krishna's revelation to Arjuna --a foundation of spirituality in India for m...

Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925), the Austrian founder of Anthroposophy, is frequently viewed by those familiar with his teaching as unique and separate from other spiritual teachers of our modern era. While, Steiner is thought by anthroposophists to be a scientist and a philosopher, as well as an interpreter of events depicted in Christian scriptures, he is nevertheless generally ignored by scientists and philosophers, as well as by both liberal and fundamentalist scriptural scholars and theologians. In this book, Robert McDermott—the editor of American Philosophy and Rudolf Steiner, which investigates Steiner’s philosophy in the context of American philosophers—places Steiner and his wor...
