The circus has been both one of the most influential forms of international popular entertainment and yet at the same time remains almost entirely absent from academic studies of popular theatrical forms. This book offers readers an introduction to the cultural history of the circus and gives an account of the dominant characteristics of the circus's aesthetic practices and relates these to the sometimes precarious developments, changes and variations in its economic organization, architecture and social status. The book goes on to outline the particular challenges that this essentially live, dangerous and body-centred form presents to literary and film representation and does so through the particular examples of works by Charles Dickens, Federico Fellini and Wim Wenders. This wide-ranging and accessible book offers ways of thinking about the meaning and significance of the circus as a specifically modern form of art and entertainment.

The Journey of G. Mastorna
Federico Fellini’s script for perhaps the most famous unmade film in Italian cinema, The Journey of G. Mastorna (1965/6), is published here for the first time in full English translation. It offers the reader a remarkable insight into Fellini’s creative process and his fascination with human mortality and the great mystery of death. Written in collaboration with Dino Buzzati, Brunello Rondi, and Bernardino Zapponi, the project was ultimately abandoned for a number of reasons, including Fellini’s near death, although it continued to inhabit his creative imagination and the landscape of his films for the rest of his career. Eine »Bibliographie der deutschen Übersetzungen aus dem Italienischen« ist schon lange ein Desiderat für die Fächer Germanistik, Romanistik, Komparatistik, Kultur- und andere Fachwissenschaften. Die große Divergenz zwischen der Masse veröffentlichter und der geringen Zahl der in den Kanon aufgenommenen Literatur macht es sehr schwer, sich über die Fülle der im Druck erschienenen Übersetzungen einen Überblick zu verschaffen. Die Zeit bis 1730 hat der bereits im Jahre 1992 veröffentlichte Teilband 1 der »Bibliographie« erfaßt. Hier wird nun die Fortsetzung dieser Bibliographie bis in die 90er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts vorgelegt. Um eine sichere Information zu gewährleisten, wurden alle über den Leihverkehr zugänglichen Veröffentlichungen durch Autopsie überprüft.
