A Stanford University Press classic.
In the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, few people would question his rating as the most popular of all classical composers. Yet there exists no substantial, up-to-date English-language study of the man and his works. Aiming to fill this gap, Sadie draws substantially on family correspondence, and discusses individual works in sequence, relating them to the events and relationships of his life. Much new material connected with Mozart has come to light in recent years and understanding of the context for Mozart's music has broadened immensely. Sadie's biography digests and interprets this corpus of new information.
The purpose of this anthology is to bring together in one volume some of the texts published in the series "Werkprofile", which focus on Kant’s relationship to his philosophical contemporaries and predecessors, and to make them accessible to a wider audience in English. In doing so, the volume is aimed at those who have an interest in better understanding the premises of Kant's philosophy, its historical context, and the development of many of Kant’s fundamental ideas. With the nineteenth century came new freedom for European Jews. Enjoying an integration that had been denied since the Middle Ages, they now wrestled with the form and degree of that integration in all areas of their lives, including in their creation, appreciation, and criticism of music. The writings focus on Jewish musicology, biography, historical surveys, secular music and songs performed in the synagogue.
