In recent years an increasing interest has been devoted to nanostructured composites. This attention is largely due to exciting possible applications ranging from new catalysts to the preparation of nanocomposites ceramics, with significant improvements in their properties. This book provides a comprehensive survey of French contributions t

Pt Platinum

This volume describes the isotopes, atoms, atomic ions, molecules, and clusters of the six platinum group elements Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, and Pt. It starts with a compilation of the properties of the isotopes, followed by the description of the formation and separation of the radioactive isotopes. The chapters on the atoms and atomic ions deal with the configuration of the outer-shell electrons, manifested by optical terms and spectra, ionization energy, and electron affinity, as weil as with the energy levels of the inner-shell electrons, manifested by X-ray spectra and Auger electron spectra. The last section gives information on the formation and the physical properties of the plati num group molecules and clusters. Most of the contributions are written by extern al experts (for details, see the back of the titte page). One of the authors (Prof. Y. Cauchois) thanks Dr. M. Othmane for his constant and efficient cooperation in the treatment of the drafts and the checking of the proofs. Inner-Shell and X-Ray Physics of Atoms and Solids

A wide range of atomic and solid state phenomena is studied today by means of x-ray excitation or inner-shell ionization, as this volume strikingly illustrates. The strong link between these two fields of investigation is partly the result of the extensive developments within each and also largely due to the broad variety of theoretical and experimental techniques now available. All im portant recent advances are to be found highlighted here; most are substantially reviewed. Two dominant research threads are evident in, the chapters of this book. While clearly distinguishable, they are inescapably en twined. One is concerned with x-ray processes as probes for the study of solid-state effects...

Chemistry International is a four-chapter news magazine of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Chapters 1 and 2 contain the membership lists and alphabetical index of IUPAC bodies 1983-1985. Chapter 3 lists all official programs ofthe Union in operation in its special Committees and in Commissions of the Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Macromolecular, Analytical Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, and Clinical Chemistry Divisions. The last chapter presents the minutes of the 32nd Council Meeting.

X-Ray and Inner-Shell Processes

This book addresses both fundamental issues and applications in the field of x-ray and inner-shell processes induced by photons, particles, or nuclear conversion. The volume contains the invited talks and all papers have been peer reviewed. This meeting brings scientists together from different disciplines of x-ray science and technology. Focus has been given to the applications of the high brilliance synchrotron x- ray sources in physics, chemistry, biology, engineering and related fields. The book is of interest to scientists in atomic, molecular and solid state physics using synchrotron radiation sources, plasma and x-ray lasers, manufacturers of x-ray equipment, electron and ion analysis apparatus, semiconductor industry chemical industry requiring advanced analytical equipment. Topics include: historical reviews; new x-ray sources and techniques; advances in x-ray optics; photoionization processes and highly charged ions; atomic and nuclear x-ray processes; x-ray scattering; x-ray applications to solids and surfaces; and biological applications.
