The Path of Somali Refugees Into Exile
Somalis have been leaving their country for the last fifteen years, fleeing civil war, difficult economic conditions, drought and famine, and now constitute one of the largest diasporas in the world. Organized in the framework of collaboration between UNHCR and different countries, this research focuses on the secondary movements of Somali refugees. It was carried out as a multi-sited project in the following countries: Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Netherlands, South Africa, Switzerland and Yemen. The report provides a detailed insight into the movements of Somali refugees that is, their trajectories, the different stages in their migra-tion history and their underlying motivations. It also gives a compara-tive overview of different protection regimes and practices.
Migrants Before the Law
This book traces the practices of migration control and its contestation in the European migration regime in times of intense politicization. The collaboratively written work brings together the perspectives of state agents, NGOs, migrants with precarious legal status, and their support networks, collected through multi-sited fieldwork in eight European states: Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden and Switzerland. Caring for Migrant and Minority Patients in European Hospitals
Social changes in European societies place migration and cultural diversity on the European political agenda. The European initiative Migrant Friendly Hospitals (MFH) aims to identify, develop and evaluate models of effective interventions. It has the following objectives: To strengthen the role of hospitals in promoting the health of migrants and ethnic minorities in the European Union and to improve hospital services for these groups. This report reviews models of effective intervention in the medical literature and provides the background information needed to enable partner hospitals taking part in the MFH initiative to select and implement suitable interventions. The interventions reviewed in this study are grouped in four areas: Communication, Responsiveness Empowerment of migrant and minority patients and communities. Politik der Inklusion und Exklusion
Internal exclusion, rather than full democratic inclusion, characterizes European immigration societies. Migrants build a part of politics and society, yet they are structurally excluded from participation in certain segments of the life. This edited volume aims to contribute to the explanation of the unequal access to differentiated rights and resources by using the concept of inclusion and exclusion. It focuses on material and symbolic mechanisms and conditions, attitudes and discourses, which produce differentiated rights and belongings of migrants. The book includes both conceptual-theoretical and empirical contributions. The topics addressed include: how spatial and temporal criteria regulate the access to social and political rights, which conflicts and negotiation processes over citizenship are taking place, which political actors are involved in these processes, and how civil society protests against exclusion.
Asylum Matters
This open access book examines everyday practices in an asylum administration. Asylum decisions are often criticised as being ‘subjective’ or ‘arbitrary’. Asylum Matters turns this claim on its head. Through the ethnographic study of asylum decision-making in the Swiss Secretariat for Migration, the book shows how regularities in administrative practice and ‘socialised subjectivity’ are produced. Migrants and Refugees from the 1960s until Today
One of the oldest phenomena in the history of mankind is migration, whether peaceful or violent, voluntary or forced, barely noticeable outfl ow or mass movements. In the 19th century, regional migration to frontier territories, as for example in the Russian Empire or the United States of America, was a natural object of research. In the 1960s there was renewed interest in migration history in Western Europe due to the increase of immigration. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the so-called Eastern Bloc, the history of borders came again into focus, leading to a new generation in migration history. This development was reinforced by the "summer of migration" of 2015. The history of migration to Austria, especially during the Second Republic, has long been a topic overlooked by historians, but received increased attention since the 1980s. The present volume presents research currently being done on the history of migration to or through Austria.
Deporting Europeans
In Deporting Europeans, Ioana Vrăbiescu examines how states within the European Union (EU) collaborate in the policing and deportation of EU citizens within EU territory. Vrăbiescu argues that the deportation of EU citizens reifies existing inequalities between central states, like France, and peripheral states, like Romania. By highlighting the massive deportation of Romanians from France, Vrăbiescu showcases these inequalities and the intricacies of EU geopolitics.
Navigating the European Migration Regime

Amid the heavy politicisation and problematisation of male migrants in Europe, this ethnographic study casts new light on their experiences, struggles and everyday resistance. The author follows the journeys of those who seek, but have little hope of achieving, permanent residence status in European countries, tracking their successive migrations, detentions and deportations within and beyond the continent. She explores migrants’ tactics, the impact of precarity on their lives and the dual feelings of enduring hope and powerless vulnerability they experience. This is a sensitive and insightful analysis of how the European migration regime shapes, and is shaped by, migrants’ practices.
