Understanding the Prophetic Hadith
This book examines two English translations of Mishkāt ul-Maṣābīḥ by Al-Tabrīzī and reflects on some of the key issues relating to Hadith translation. The highly instructional nature of the Prophetic Hadith means that the comprehensibility of any translation is of great importance to a non-Arabic-speaking Muslim, and there is a need to analyze available translations to determine whether these texts can function properly in the target culture. The problem is: by what theory do we reconcile translation and interpretation of the Bible and Qur’an in order to achieve unity of thought and understanding? We do that by the new Perfect Harmony Theory of Translation and Interpreting where we enhance the role of metaphor to answer and solve this scholarly translation problem that has persisted in the Qur’an for 1400 years! We explore translation as a tool for conflict resolution in interfaith dialogue. By this new approach, we reconcile the apparent misconceptions in Qur’an and Bible translations such that, whether intralingual or interlingual, perfect harmony in thought and understanding must reflect.
