Current interest in research of solidification of melts is focussed to understand crystal nucleation and crystal growth. They determine the solidified product with its physical properties. A detailed description of these processes lead to the development and validation of physical models, which may form the basis of quantitative modelling of solidification routes in e.g. casting and foundry processes in order to develop a predictive capability in the design of materials during solidification. This book, based on a symposium held at EUROMAT 2003 aims to gives an overview on current developments in the research of solidification and crystallisation of liquids. The materials of interest range from metals and their alloys over semiconductors and isolators to organic substances.
Solidification is one of the oldest processes for producing complex shapes for applications ranging from art to industry, and remains as one of the most important commercial processes for many materials. Since the 1980s, numerous fundamental developments in the understanding of solidification processes and microstructure formation have come from both analytical theories and the application of computational techniques using commonly available powerful computers. This book integrates these developments in a comprehensive volume that also presents and places them in the context of more classical theories. This second edition highlights the key concepts within each chapter to help guide the read...
This book contains a collection of papers on the science, engineering, and technology of shape casting, with contributions from researchers worldwide. Among the topics that are addressed are the structure-property-performance relationships, modeling of casting processes, and the effect of casting defects on the mechanical properties of cast alloys.
This book focuses on industrial development, design, implementation, and transformation using technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data Analysis, and Blockchain. It incorporates complex processes, functions, and various other elements as one central component of digital systems. Industrial Transformation: Implementation and Essential Components and Processes of Digital Systems discusses the industry transformation aligned with the computerization of manufacturing and the required skills needed to build a new workforce. This book covers the role that AI plays in the management of resource flow and decision-making in the transformati...

In a career spanning almost six decades, Prof. John T. Berry has made significant contributions towards building our understanding of solidification and process-structure-property relationships in shaped castings. Celebrating his contributions, the Fourth International Shape Casting Symposium, which takes place at the 2011 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition, has been organized in his honor. Shape Casting 2011 contains the proceedings of the symposium in which scientists and engineers from around the world presented their own research findings, discussed challenges in the field, and projected future directions. Papers explore such topics as liquid metal quality; filling and feeding systems; process modeling for shaped castings; structure-property relationships; performance of shaped castings; and machinability of castings.
Solidification is one of the oldest processes for producing useful implements and remains one of the most important modern commercial processes. This text describes the fundamentals of the technology in a coherent way, using consistent notation.
Papers from a March 2004 symposium describe recent work in solidification processes and microstructures in the areas of mushy zone dynamics, rapid solidification, and phase field modeling. Some specific topics include kinetics of dendritic mushy zones, anisotropy effects in lamellar eutectic growth, network modeling of liquid metal transport in solidifying aluminum alloys, and the topology of coarsened microstructures. Other topics include diffuse solid-liquid interfaces and solute trapping, phase selection transitions during undercooled melt solidification, dendritic growth in confined spaces, the influence of foreign particles in the formation of polycrystalline solidification patterns, and a cellular automaton for growth of solutal dendrites.
