Choosing Architecture
For centuries, architecture has been one of the most publicly discussed subjects, by architects and users or inhabitants, but also by critics, theoreticians, historians, and writers. The Urban Fact
The Urban Fact examines Aldo Rossis formulation of a theory of the city, developed over the period of roughly ten years, from Architecture of the City published in 1966, to Analogous City exhibited in 1976. Rossis theory is not taken as an abstract argument, but is seen through his work from that period. A careful selection of twenty-three projects is presented here at face value. These projects, bound by the reality of their setting, but also charged with cultural and civic ambition, illustrate the intricacy of an architectural project as a complex 'whole'. They also demonstrate how architecture could contribute to the changing urban context of the field, hinting at an oeuvre painfully aware of its limitations and stubborn in its intentions.

Rooted in the Real
Geert Bekaert (1928) is the most influential and most productive architecture critic in the Dutch-speaking area. Since the fifties, he has been involved in every possible theoretical, critical or cultural debate on architecture. In this book a broad selection of his writings is for the first time ever presented to an English-speaking audience. The book consists of four divisions: in part 1, theoretical essays are collected. In part 2, Bekaert writes on the oeuvres of both young and old Belgian architects. Part 3 presents shorter criticism of contemporary architecture. Part 4 presents a selection of his writings on international architects, such as Rem Koolhaas, Frank Gehry, Le Corbusier and Aldo Rossi. Each text is accompanied by insightful illustrations, often pictures taken by the author himself and previously unpublished.
Building atmosphere
Atmosphere is an essential concept for Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. In his text Atmospheres (1996), Zumthor identified a series of themes that play a role in his work in achieving architectonic atmosphere. OASE exchanges ideas with Zumthor about the current relevance of this text, and about the practice of bringing together these elements in the design and construction process. Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa relates atmosphere in architecture to examples and theories from other disciplines like psychology and the visual arts. Zumthor and Pallasmaa also introduce the work of contemporary architects who in their view succeed in truly creating atmosphere through construction.
