Historically the management of public lands from a multiple use perspective has led to a system that emphasizes those habitat components or faunal elements that primarily resulted in some sort of definable economic value. While this often benefitted other species that were not even considered in the original prescriptions, it also negatively impacted others. We no longer can afford to take this simplistic view of ecosystem management. We need to use a more holistic approach where ecological landscapes are considered as units, and land management practices incorporate all elements into an integrated policy. This includes examining the impacts of proposed land uses on amphibian, reptile, and small mammal populations.

Grand Challenges in Environmental Sciences

Scientists have long sought to unravel the fundamental mysteries of the land, life, water, and air that surround us. But as the consequences of humanity's impact on the planet become increasingly evident, governments are realizing the critical importance of understanding these environmental systemsâ€"and investing billions of dollars in research to do so. To identify high-priority environmental science projects, Grand Challenges in Environmental Sciences explores the most important areas of research for the next generation. The book's goal is not to list the world's biggest environmental problems. Rather it is to determine areas of opportunity thatâ€"with a concerted investmentâ€"could yield significant new findings. Nominations for environmental science's "grand" challenges were solicited from thousands of scientists worldwide. Based on their responses, eight major areas of focus were identifiedâ€"areas that offer the potential for a major scientific breakthrough of practical importance to humankind, and that are feasible if given major new funding. The book further pinpoints four areas for immediate action and investment.

Norwegians, Swedes and More: Destination Dakota Terriory, Benson-Johnson

"Norwegians, Swedes and More" provides a synopsis of our ancestral family components; Norwegians and Swedes as well as those of French, German, English and Canadian descent by way of the St. Lawrence Seaway in Quebec and upstate New York. Part I, Destination Dakota Territory, describes Loren's multifaceted family from all of the above backgrounds and finds them as homesteaders in Minnehaha County, "Dakota" [Dakota Territory, South Dakota]. Part II, Norway to Minnesota, is "all Norwegian" and finds Mavis' families homesteading in Lac qui Parle County in west central Minnesota where they reached their final Vesterheim. This book is the fourth of six about these families, each containing the same core of material to set the stage for individual family presentations. Book Four provides descriptions and stories about Loren's Benson - Johnson Swedish ancestors and descendants after beginning their lives in Eldsberga and Halmstad areas in southwestern Sweden.

I Loved You Wednesday is a novel about temporary commitments. For Chris and Steve, love develops out of a friendship rooted in their common struggle for that one big break on the TV networks or on Broadway. They must face the rejections and disappointments, readings, and tryouts. Zany, sympathetic, and intensely alive, Chris and Steve live each day with all the verve and delight of a Holly Golightly whose diamonds are the lights of Broadway, but love on Wednesday may not be love on Thursday, for today's (1975) 'liberated' generation often plans futilely to fulfill dreams of permanent relationships. The love they share is sadly outgrown as their horizons widen. Tears and laughter join in I Loved You Wednesday to present the total experience of the young lovers living in the mid 1970's.
