Jesus in the Epistle of Barnabas
Edwards uses the Epistle of Barnabas as a starting point to encourage reflection on the reception history of Jesus in the the first three centuries of Christianity. Edwards examines the descriptive representation of Jesus in the Epistle of Barnabas and, where other studies have narrowed their foci to such issues as God's broken covenant with Israel, nullification of Torah observance, and imminent eschatology, discusses these issues only insofar as they are relevant for a further understanding of the Jesus tradition. Edwards' discussion examines three key questions: who does Barnabas say Jesus is? What sources inform this identification? And how is Jesus employed by the author's argument? Edwards reveals how Jesus is used by the author in his attempt to establish an identity that is both separate from the synagogue and in continuity with the scriptures. This enables a consideration of the Jesus tradition with an acknowledgement of how this was manipulated by the author of the Epistle for a different purpose.
