Paris Changing

Between 1888 and 1927 Eugne Atget meticulously photographed Paris and its environs, capturing in thousands of photographs the city's parks, streets, and buildings as well as its diverse inhabitants. His images preserved the vanishing architecture of the ancien rgime as Paris grew into a modern capital and established Atget as one of the twentieth century's greatest and most revered photographers. Christopher Rauschenberg spent a year in the late '90s revisiting and rephotographing many of Atget's same locations. Paris Changing features seventy-four pairs of images beautifully reproduced in duotone. By meticulously replicating the emotional as well as aesthetic qualities of Atget's images, Ra...

Steinman's book really stands alone among performance art books. While there are many that document what particular artists are doing, this one offers a way in for a person who wants to perform (or know more about how performance artists work). Must reading for anyone interested in performance art, it will also be fascinating to those in theatre, playwriting, visual arts and performance of any sort.

'You're Joseph Heller's daughter? How terrific!' But was there a catch? Like his most famous work, Joseph Heller was a study in contradictions: eccentric, brilliant and voracious, but also mercurial, competitive, and stubborn, with a love of mischief that sometimes cut too close to the bone. Yossarian Slept Here is a daughter's darkly funny, poignant memoir about growing up a Heller - from her colourful family members and her parents' tumultuous marriage, to her father's celebrity friends and the family's eccentric neighbours. This is a story about achieving a dream, about fame and its aftermath, about squandered opportunities, lasting love and family.

Portland Renaissance

There was a time in Portland, Oregon, long before safe bike lanes and inviting coffee shops, that the city featured an outdated downtown, a lagging economy, and not much hope for the future. Then the 1980s and '90s came and a new Portland was making its presence felt, a Portland steeped in creativity and bold initiative. Eventually, Portland would gain national attention in areas such as urban living, advertising, athletic wear, dining, and craft brewing. That can be hard to remember in the aftermath of Covid, rising crime, and tent cities, but beneath the graffiti, Portland remains a vibrant, livable city with much to celebrate. Portland Renaissance reminds readers of what shaped Portland into a great city and how so much of it began in the last two decades of the 20th century.
