Bishop George Bell always felt that the Church must endeavour to meet the problems of the modern world. He was thus foremost in applying the precepts of the Christian faith to national and international issues. George Bell very often raised his voice in the House of Lords (of which he was a distinguished member from December 1937 till January 1958) against class and racial hatred, against war, and against totalitarianism, and spoke for the innocent and helpless victims of persecution. Complete texts of all Bell's House of Lords speeches are presented here, published for the first time in one volume. The issues that Bell tackled are, in essence, still relevant today. This volume also includes unpublished correspondence between George Bell and Rudolf Hess, Hitler's deputy. After the National Socialists came to power in Germany, Bell, as a committed Christian, felt that he had to act in defence of the German Church, which the Nazis were eager to destroy. The Bishop made strenuous efforts to contact people in power in Germany, people who, he knew, took decisions with momentous consequences. Rudolf Hess was one of them.

Everything looks different in this world through the lens of the Cross. This book deals with reconciliation, humility, identity, power, suffering, life and atonement. These are familar themes for a Lent book but in Dr Tomlin's hands they are given exciting new meaning which will touch the hearts and minds of men and women in a turbulent modern world. Dr Tomlin is a theologian of the first rank, but he is also a writer with a keen pastoral commitment, celebrated for his common touch.

Guidelines for the Professional Conduct of the Clergy

This Report places before the clergy, bishops, priests and deacons, and the whole Church, guidelines for the professional conduct of all those called to ordained ministry. These are offered by clergy to clergy, but they have significance for the laity to whom the clergy minister and with whom they share the challenge of mission. The Guidelines are not a legal code, but the beginning of an ongoing conversation in which ministers and those to whom they minister need to engage.

Martin Warner sets out to explore the enterprise of being a Christian. As a guide for this exploration Warner boldly uses the prayers said by the celebrant of the Eucharist while putting on the priestly vestments. These prayers focus attention on aspects of life that are common to us all: hands, mind, fashion, commitment and celebration. What we discover here is an extended mediation on faith in Jesus Christ. It is an account that directs our attention unflinchingly to the reality of life without losing sight of heaven as our destiny.
