This study addresses the neglected history of the people of the Federated States of Micronesia’s (FSM) engagement with the outside world. Situated in the northwest Pacific, FSM’s strategic location has led to four colonial rulers. Histories of FSM to date have been largely written by sympathetic outsiders. Indigenous perspectives of FSM history have been largely absent from the main corpus of historical literature. Namoluk Beyond The Reef
This case study examines emigrants from Namoluk Atoll in the Eastern caroline islands of Micronesia, in the Western pacific. Most members of the Namoluk Community (cbon Namoluk) do not currently live there. some 60 percent of them have moved to chuuk, Guam, Hawai'i, or the mainland United states (such as Eureka, California). The question is how (and why) those expatriates contine to think of themselves as cbon Namoluk, amd behave accodingly, despite being a far-flung network of people, with inevitable erosions of shared language and culture.

Transforming Colonial Encounters
This dissertation explores the rich and complex performing arts of Chuuk State through a combination of ethnographic description, historical investigation, musical and poetic analysis, and cultural theory. This study also examines musical practices within historical encounters and links musical repertory with broad cultural and social constructions of indigenous knowledge, emotion, and the expression of faith. Drawing on postcolonial theory and recent work in Pacific Island Studies, this work presents the notion of tradition in Chuuk as transformational, flexible and inexorably linked to larger processes of colonialism, response and exchange. The musical and cultural data from this dissertation reveal Chuukese musical heritage as culturally defined, articulated and changed by the people of Chuuk as part of their daily and lived experiences. The study of Chuuk has application to how other societies traverse and move past colonialism within the cultural frameworks of poetry, music and dance.
