Alle Oekraïners die ik ken
Wanneer Rusland buurland Oekraïne binnenvalt en miljoenen mensen het land ontvluchten, reist Olaf Koens in tegengestelde richting, dwars door een land vol bittere en blijmoedige ontmoetingen. Hij spreekt familie en vrienden, hij reist langs frontlinies, veldhospitalen en mortuaria. In een uitpuilende evacuatietrein realiseert Koens zich dat hij de Oekraïners heeft onderschat. Hij begint hun namen en verhalen te noteren, legt uit wie ze zijn en wat ze drijft. Het zijn alle Oekraïners die hij kent. Uit de lange stroom ontmoetingen rijst een ruw, pijnlijk, hoopvol en vooral persoonlijk portret van een onrechtvaardige oorlog, van een land en een volk in verzet.
Onderwijs maakt het verschil
Dit boek gaat over de samenhang tussen onderwijs en de leefwereld van Turkse jonge vrouwen uit drie verschillende perspectieven in de Turkse samenleving. In de eerste plaats gaat de aandacht van de auteur naar Turkse migrantenmeisjes in België. Vervolgens bieden de situatie van jonge vrouwen uit een ruraal emigratiegebied in Turkije en uit een middenklassenmilieu in Istanbul relevant vergelijkingsmateriaal. Onderwijs is het uitgangspunt voor de analyse. Het speelt immers een sleutelrol in de socio-culturele organisatie van een complexe maatschappij. Onderwijservaringen bepalen in belangrijke mate het perspectief van waaruit men naar de wereld kan kijken. Ook de eigenheid van de subcultuur waartoe Turkse jonge vrouwen behoren, heeft een invloed op de manier waarop zij de informatie uit hun opleiding verwerken. Onderwijs beïnvloedt eveneens de etniciteitbeleving van Turkse migrantenmeisjes. Inzicht in de betekenis van onderwijs in deze processen draagt bij om de componenten die een goede integratie van Turkse jonge vrouwen in de Belgische samenleving belemmeren dan wel bevorderen, te begrijpen.
