May 16th.-The garden is the place I go to for refuge and shelter, not the house. In the house are duties and annoyances, servants to exhort and admonish, furniture, and meals; but out there blessings crowd round me at every step-it is there that I am sorry for the unkindness in me, for those selfish thoughts that are so much worse than they feel; it is there that all my sins and silliness are forgiven, there that I feel protected and at home, and every flower and weed is a friend and every tree a lover. -from Elizabeth and Her German Garden First published anonymously in 1898, this beautiful chronicle of languid days spent in a rejuvenating Italian garden was a tremendous bestseller at the t...

Volume the First

Jane Austen collected her childhood writings into three manuscript notebooks, both as a record of her earliest work and for the convenience of reading aloud to her family and friends. Volume the First (as she entitled it) contains fourteen pieces - literary skits and family jokes - dating from about 1787, when she was eleven, to 1793. Amusing in themselves, they give us a direct picture of the lively literary and family milieu in which the novelist's juvenilia was formed. This new edtion carries a Foreword by Lord David Cecil, a former president of the Jane Austen Society and Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford. There is also a Publisher's Preface by Brian Southam, author of Jane Austen's Literary Manuscripts and other works on Jane Austen.

Winnie-the-Pooh can travel with you wherever you go with this mini pocket library containing six sweet books! Each book in this little library introduces one of A.A.Milne's beloved characters from the Hundred Acre Wood including Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Rabbit and Christopher Robin. Beautifully illustrated in a young, nursery style, inspired by the original decorations by E.H.Shepard. It's perfect for little hands and suitable for children aged 10 months and up. This set is small enough to carry with you, so the books can be used to entertain children wherever you go. Children will also love placing the book back covers in the right order to reveal a big picture of Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends. Milne's classic children's stories - featuring Piglet, Eeyore, Christopher Robin and, of course, Pooh himself - are both heart-warming and funny, teaching lessons of friendship and reflecting the power of a child's imagination like no other story before or since.
