Italy's Foreign Policy in the Twenty-first Century
Italy’s foreign policy has often been dismissed as too idiosyncratic, inconsistent and lacking ambition. This book offers new insights into the position Italy has attained in the international community in the 21st century. It explores how the country has sought to take advantage of its passage from a bipolar to a multipolar system and assesses the ways in which it has engaged internationally, its new responsibilities, and the manner in which it conducts its policies in the pursuit of its interests, whether political or commercial. It argues that although Italy is engaged internationally, there is a gap between its actions and what it actually delivers, and as long as this gap continues Italy is likely to remain a partial and unreliable foreign policy actor. Divided into three parts, this book explores: the context and processes which characterise Italy’s external action its relations with crucial countries and regions such as the US, the EU, and the BRICs its security and defence policies. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of European Politics, Foreign Policy analysis and Italian studies.
West-Russia Relations in Light of the Ukraine Crisis
In light of Russia’s annexation of Crimea and destabilization of Ukraine, West-Russia relations have so dramatically deteriorated that talk of a new Cold War has become routine. NATO’s role in Europe is again in the spotlight, with experts and policymakers pondering whether the Alliance needs to go back to its historical roots and re-calibrate itself as an instrument of defence from and containment of Russia. At the same time, cooperation between Russia and the West has not collapsed altogether coordinate on issues such as Iran’s nuclear programme. Clearly, tensions over Ukraine are so strong that the risk of a breakdown in relations cannot be ruled out. La Rivista di Studi Politici Internazionali è una rivista scientifica, interdisciplinare, che ha una lunga tradizione. Essa è stata fondata a Firenze nel 1934 dai Professori Giacinto Bosco e Jacopo Mazzei e dagli Ambasciatori Amedeo Giannini e Cesare Majoni nello Studio di politica estera del Regio Istituto "Cesare Alfieri", allo scopo di promuovere gli studi politici internazionali e di contribuire alla formazione dei giovani destinati alla carriera politica, diplomatica o ad operare in altro modo in campo internazionale. E' stata diretta ininterrottamente dal Professore Giuseppe Vedovato dal 1947 al 2005 e a partire dal 2006 ne è direttore la Professoressa Maria Grazia Melchionni".
