The Role of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Human Nutrition is a component of Encyclopedia of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Human health and wellbeing depend strongly on production, quality, and availability of food. Agriculture, or cultivation of the soil, harvesting crops, and raising livestock, which are the main sources of food, has no single origin. At different times and in numerous places, many plants and animals have been domesticated to provide food for humankind. Fishing, like farming, is a form of primary foo...
Food is one of the basic necessities of life, yet nutrition has only relatively recently been recognised as one of the most important determinants of individual and public health. A full understanding of this multi-faceted subject area requires an integrated approach, from molecular to societal level. Essentials of Human Nutrition provides a complete and student-friendly introduction to the field making it an ideal companion forstudents throughout their study of nutrition. Careful editing of contributions from an international team of experts draws together a broad spectrum of disciplines and promotes the practical application ofnutritional science at the human level, covering everything a student needs to know in order to understand the importance of nutrition to health and disease.

As computer and space technologies have been developed, geoscience information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technologies, which deal with the geospatial information, have been rapidly maturing. Moreover, over the last few decades, machine learning techniques including artificial neural network (ANN), deep learning, decision tree, and support vector machine (SVM) have been successfully applied to geospatial science and engineering research fields. The machine learning techniques have been widely applied to GIS and RS research fields and have recently produced valuable results in the areas of geoscience, environment, natural hazards, and natural resources. This book is a collection representing novel contributions detailing machine learning techniques as applied to geoscience information systems and remote sensing.

About half of the global burden of disease is due to chronic noncommunicable diseases such as obesity, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases and cancer, which are all related to modifiable risk factors such as unbalanced diet and malnutrition as well as determinants such as behavior and lifestyle. Dietary patterns during the last few decades have undergone a general shift towards high energy density and fatty foods combined with a low proportion of plant components. The resulting diet profile has proven inadequate to meet the physiological needs of a healthy human life. A comprehensive and highly valuable source of knowledge for all professionals interested in the underlying causes of today's major health challenges, this publication gives an in-depth view of the various methods of monitoring and addressing this precarious situation: impact of gender and age on eating behavior, role of a vegetarian lifestyle, processed and fortified foods, organic foods, ethnic food culture, and consumer choice.
Did you ever wonder how "fresh" vegetables and fruits appear on your supermarket shelves all year round? Clearly, they have been grown, processed, and preserved in ways that we may not be fully aware of. Yet, it is crucially important - not only for your own and your family's health but also for the sustainability of the entire natural environment - that we know the facts about where our food comes from, how it gets to our table, and how each of us as individuals can improve the health and well-being of our planet. Learn how to get started with this simple, informative guide, recognized by UNESCO as a "contribution for the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development". The ...
