Die Studie "Das Amt und die Vergangenheit" (2010) hat nicht nur in der Öffentlichkeit, sondern auch in der Fachwissenschaft eine lebhafte Debatte über die Rolle des Auswärtigen Amts in der NS-Diktatur hervorgerufen. Der vorliegende Sammelband bezieht sich auf diese Diskussion, die jedoch nicht einfach nur erneut geführt wird. Ziel ist vielmehr eine Bestandsaufnahme der Forschung nach der Debatte. Was wissen wir wirklich über das Auswärtige Amt im Nationalsozialismus, wo liegen die Desiderate, was ist gerade in Arbeit, was unbestritten, was umstritten?
