Rapid Cycle Real-Time PCR
The first comprehensive treatise on Rapid Cycle Real-Time PCR. With amplification times of 15-30 minutes of on-line detection and analysis, nucleic acid quantification of mutation analysis finally becomes a routine, powerful and rapid method. Focusing primarily on the LightCycler, an instrument that combines Rapid Cycle PCR with fluorescent monitoring, this technology provides convenient analysis by melting temperatures. PCR products can be identified by product Tm, and single base mismatches can easily be genotyped by probe Tm. Methods chapters detail the theory behind quantification of mutation analysis; the design of synthesis of fluorescent hybridization probes of the preparation of template DNA. Application chapters apply nucleid acid quantification to infectious organisms of intracellular messengers and mutation detection to somatic of acquired mutations.
Cancer Research Supported Under BIOMED 1
The pace of discovery, within the EU, of scientific aspects of cancer research and of developments in the clinical field is so rapid that it is sometimes difficult to keep abreast. This brief overview attempts to highlight some of the advances in the field, as part of BIOMED programme funded research and specific results due to the co-operative spirit established by the scientific community. Mit Hilfe prädiktiv-gendiagnostischer Untersuchungsverfahren gelingt die Identifizierung genetischer Risikofaktoren weit vor Sichtbarwerdung erster Erkrankungssymptome. Am Beispiel der prädiktiven Brustkrebsdiagnostik begründet Ariane Schroeder das Recht auf Nichtwissen aus Sicht einer aufgeklärten Patientenautonomie positiv und profiliert es als einzelfallbezogene, moralisch verantwortete Option im Umgang mit den Grenzen des Wissens. Bislang wurde das Recht auf Nichtwissen primär als defensives Abwehrrecht thematisiert. Demgegenüber betont die Autorin den Eigenwert des wohlüberlegten Wissensverzichts und wirkt einer fragwürdigen Verantwortungsüberforderung des Einzelnen entgegen.

Dieses Buch ist die erste historische Studie zur humangenetischen Beratungspraxis in der Bundesrepublik, die nach Vorstellungen von Behinderung und dem Umgang mit behinderten Menschen in dieser Institution fragt. Von den 1960er bis in die 1990er Jahre hinein analysiert sie die Einstellungen und Praktiken gegenüber Menschen mit geistigen Behinderungen und ihren Angehörigen sowie die Kritik daran und die Widerstände dagegen. Die Studie belegt erstmals empirisch, dass genetische Beratung darauf abzielte, Behinderung u.a. mit Sterilisationen zu verhindern; sie wirft zudem einen kritischen Blick auf gängige Deutungen der Zeitgeschichte.

Cancer Chemotherapy
Today, acute leukemia, malignant lymphoma and several other cancers are regarded as curable diseases. As a result, the last 10 years has seen remarkable progress in early diagnosis and treatment of a range of cancers. Treatment is based mainly on chemotherapeutic schedules that include combinations of new agents. The past five volumes of proceedings of the Nagoya International Symposia on Cancer Treatment have covered progress in these agents and their clinical applications. The main topic of this volume is minimal residual disease. Early detection and treatment of minimal residual disease during complete remission of acute leukemia, lymphona, and solid tumors after surgical treatment are the most important problems to overcome in obtaining cure. Even in advanced cancer, cure by treatment is dependent on a reduction in the numbers of cancer cells. Minimal residual cells are eradicated by chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgical treatment. Further, progress in immunological and biochemical fields has enabled detection of minimal residual cells using monoclonal antibodies, in vitro DNA amplification of the immunoglobulin hypervariable sequences, and polymerase chain reactions.

Das Buch bietet in 24 Kapiteln einen systematischen Einblick in methodische und thematische Fragen der Medizin- und Bioethik in Deutschland von 1995 bis 2016. Dieser beginnt mit metaethischen Aspekten der Relation zwischen Ethik und Moral sowie mit der keineswegs unproblematischen Fächerkombination von Medizinethik und Medizingeschichte an den deutschen Universitäten. Sodann werden zentrale bioethische und biopolitische Diskursfelder wie Stammzellforschung, Präimplantationsdiagnostik, prädiktive Medizin sowie Sterbehilfe und Transplantationsmedizin erörtert, die ausnahmslos brisante normative Probleme am Beginn und am Ende des menschlichen Lebens betreffen. Anders als im derzeitigen bioethischen „Mainstream“ liegt in diesem Buch der Akzent auf der Betonung des Vorrangs der unantastbaren Würde des Menschen vor dessen niemals absolut zu denkender Autonomie.
