Connected Histories of the Roman Civil Wars (88–30 BCE)
This book offers a distinctive take on the civil wars that unfolded in the Late Roman Republic. It frames their discussion against the backdrop of the Mediterranean contexts in which they were fought, and sets out to bring to the centre of the debate the significance of provincial agency on a traumatic and complex process, which cannot be understood through an exclusive focus on Roman and Italian developments. The study of the late Republican civil wars can be productively read as an exercise of ‘connected history’, in which the fundamental interdependence of the Mediterranean world comes to the fore through a set of case studies that await to be understood through a properly integrative approach. Our project brings together an international and diverse lineup of scholars, who engage with a wide range of literary, documentary, and archaeological material, and make a collective contribution to the reframing of a problem that requires a collaborative and interdisciplinary outlook, and can yield invaluable insights to the understanding of the Roman imperial project.

Contracts relating to scientific/technical development are effective only where they are enforceable or valid under relevant law, can be practically implemented by the parties, and address matters arising from the relevant scientific/technical issues and practices. Negotiators are often hampered by their lack of knowledge of contract law and of the biotechnological techniques used to derive new molecules and genes or genetic or biochemical formulas from biological samples. This lack of knowledge means they may not make the best choices. This book examines the special issues in applying contract law to the rights to take and utilize genetic resources; and the scientific issues and the manner in which they affect the negotiation of ABS agreements.
Governing Agrobiodiversity
Plant genetic diversity is crucial to the breeding of food crops and is therefore a central precondition for food security. Diverse genetic resources provide the genetic traits required to deal with crop pests and diseases, as well as changing climate conditions. Plant genetic diversity is also essential for traditional small-scale farming, and is therefore an indispensable factor in the fight against poverty. However, the diversity of domesticated plant varieties is disappearing at an alarming rate while interest in the commercial use of genetic resources has increased in line with bio-technologies, followed by demands for intellectual property rights. This important book contributes to our understanding of how international regimes affect the management of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture in developing countries. It identifies entry points to shape a better governance of agrobiodiversity and provides the first comprehensive analysis of how the international agreements pertaining to crop genetic resources affect the management of these vital resources for food security and poverty eradication in developing countries.
A Multilateral System for Plant Genetic Resources
This paper argues that a comprehensive Multilateral System for plant genetic resouce for food and agriculture is required which ensures the conservation of plant genetic resources and their utilization form human benefit at a global level. Such a system would incorporate agreements on access to plant genetic resources which ensured their availability; mechanisms for the sharing of benefits derived from plant genetic resources; conservation networks and information systems, and research and plant breeding capacity which meets the needs of farmers worldwide.
