"I am the supercommunity, and you are only starting to recognize me. I grew out of something that used to be humanity. Some have compared me to angry crowds in public squares; others compare me to wind and atmosphere, or to software." Invited to exhibit at the 56th Venice Biennale, e-flux journal produced a single issue over a four-month span, publishing an article a day both online and on-site at Venice. In essays, poems, short stories, and plays, artists and theorists trace the negative collective that is the subject of contemporary life, in which art, the internet, and globalization have shed their utopian guises but persist as naked power, in the face of apocalyptic ecological disaster and against the claims of the social commons. "I convert care to cruelty, and cruelty back to care. I convert political desires to economic flows and data, and then I convert them back again. I convert revolutions to revelations. I don't want security, I want to leave, and then disperse myself everywhere and all the time."

Perspectives in Zebrafish Research

In the past decade, a small tropical vertebrate fish, zebrafish, has rapidly gained the interest of research laboratories worldwide as a model system. This topic will provide updated perspectives on all fields of zebrafish research from experts gathering at the 5th Zebrafish Principal Investigators Meeting in Trento, 20-23 March 2018. The community of researchers using zebrafish is rapidly expanding, necessitating a clear plan for how to tackle central questions that remain a challenge in the field and providing inspiration for future studies. This is the aim of the workshop and the Frontiers Research Topic will provide a platform for dissemination of novel ideas arising from this meeting.

Brazilians Abroad

Emigrant voting has been implemented in more than 150 countries in the world, allowing emigrants to take part in the elections of their home country. This phenomenon is a consequence of global migration and political transnationalism. Looking at the experience of Brazil, this book explores the changed nature of Brazilian emigration and analyses how emigrant voting was initially introduced and subsequently permitted in all presidential elections. The book also investigates what external voting rights represent to the Brazilian emigrant community and if and how Brazilian emigrants engage politically with their country of origin. It is based on original research and data collected from Brazilians abroad across the seven countries with the most Brazilian emigrants.

The Promise of Diversity

The Promise of Diversity

Nicolas Wasser critically examines how sexual and racial identities are currently being articulated through capitalist brands and labor. On the basis of an ethnographic case study about a Brazilian fashion enterprise, he shows how young - lesbian, gay and black - sales employees align themselves with the ambivalent promises put forward by diversity management. Their affective labor, the study argues, is at the center of new and globally unfolding regimes of the precarious. Readers will thus find a rich sociological account from the Global South on how neoliberal logics of self-optimization both traverse and fuel the aspirations of the minoritized.
