The CTSA Program at NIH

In 2006 the National Institutes of Health (NIH) established the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program, recognizing the need for a new impetus to encourage clinical and translational research. At the time it was very difficult to translate basic and clinical research into clinical and community practice; making it difficult for individual patients and communities to receive its benefits. Since its creation the CTSA Program has expanded, with 61 sites spread across the nation's academic health centers and other institutions, hoping to provide catalysts and test beds for policies and practices that can benefit clinical and translation research organizations throughout the cou...

Building the Clinical Research Workforce: Challenges, Capacities and Competencies

This is an unprecedented time for clinical research. The number and complexity of clinical research studies have increased significantly in the last decade. Individual participation in clinical research broadened, with an increase in diverse populations, diseases, and geographic settings. The successful execution of these studies, however, has been compromised by an international shortage of clinical research professionals, coupled with an appreciation of the growing number of core competencies necessary for performance. Developed over a decade ago, the Joint Task Force for Clinical Trial Competency (JTF) Framework outlines the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are essential for the safe and effective conduct of a clinical study. This framework has been used to develop professional pathways, trainings, and certification programs and has been extended internationally through translation.

The reader will come to fully understand important concepts including case-control study, prospective cohort study, randomized trial, and reliability study. Medical researchers will benefit from greater confidence in their ability to initiate and execute their own investigations, avoid common pitfalls in translational orthopedics, and know what is needed in collaboration. Further, this title is an indispensable tool in grant writing and funding efforts. The practical, straightforward approach he...

Public Health Perspectives on Depressive Disorders

How does mental health impact public health? In 2001, the WHO recognized depressive disorders as the leading cause of disability worldwide. But most Americans who meet diagnostic criteria for major depression are untreated or undertreated. Luckily, recent advances have finally made it possible for the field of public health to address mental health in the population. Public Health Perspectives on Depressive Disorders fills a gap by identifying the tools and strategies of public health practice and by exploring their application to twenty-first-century public mental health policy and practice. By looking at depressive disorders through a public health lens, this book highlights the centrality...

Comprehensive Healthcare Simulation: Anesthesiology

This book functions as a practical guide for the use of simulation in anesthesiology. Divided into five parts, it begins with the history of simulation in anesthesiology, its relevant pedagogical principles, and the modes of its employment. Readers are then provided with a comprehensive review of simulation technologies as employed in anesthesiology and are guided on the use of simulation for a variety of learners: undergraduate and graduate medical trainees, practicing anesthesiologists, and allied health providers. Subsequent chapters provide a ‘how-to” guide for the employment of simulation across wide range of anesthesiology subspecialties before concluding with a proposed roadmap for the future of translational simulation in healthcare. The Comprehensive Textbook of Healthcare Simulation: Anesthesiology is written and edited by leaders in the field and includes hundreds of high-quality color surgical illustrations and photographs.
