Leading experts in the fields of science, mathematics and education present a plan for improving mathematics, science and technology education for all American elementary and secondary students so that their achievement is the best in the world by 1995. The Commission believes that while individual American schools and students excel in science and mathematics, the average American student is said to need a much firmer grounding at the elementary and secondary school levels. It notes that the most serious problem is a severe shortage of qualified teachers. Makes a number of recommendations and calls for stronger leadership on this issue through such means as a National Education Council reporting to the President.

Tensors: Asymptotic Geometry and Developments 2016–2018

Tensors are used throughout the sciences, especially in solid state physics and quantum information theory. This book brings a geometric perspective to the use of tensors in these areas. It begins with an introduction to the geometry of tensors and provides geometric expositions of the basics of quantum information theory, Strassen's laser method for matrix multiplication, and moment maps in algebraic geometry. It also details several exciting recent developments regarding tensors in general. In particular, it discusses and explains the following material previously only available in the original research papers: (1) Shitov's 2017 refutation of longstanding conjectures of Strassen on rank ad...

During its first 14 years of existence, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) was located at the Education Commission of the States (ECS). This annotated bibliography of 575 references lists all major publications by or about NAEP published between 1969 and 1983. References are in a classified arrangement, by specific or special assessment. Documents not dealing with a specific assessment are grouped by: Methodological Publications; Special Analyses; and General and Miscellaneous. Materials by NAEP are separated from materials about NAEP done by external organizations. Subject, Personal Author, and Preparing Institution indexes are provided. The compilation is based on materials (documents and journal articles) archived in the database of the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC), and therefore most documents cited can be obtained through the ERIC Document Reproduction Service (EDRS). This new volume of The Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) Professional Book Series is a critical and timely resource that paves the way and guides the future of mathematics teacher education. The collection of work in this AMTE Handbook of Mathematics Teacher Education reflects on research and what we know about how best to prepare and support both mathematics teachers and mathematics teacher educators and presents what is happening in the field. Examples included in the 22 chapters highlight how we are preparing teachers across multiple contexts (e.g., within district, in content courses for the major) and grade ranges (K-20+) and all chapters highlight relevant connections...
