This is the United Kingdom, but it's no country you know. No place you ever want to see, even in the howling, shuttered madness of your worst dreams. You survived. One man. You walk because you have to. You have no choice. At the end of this molten road, running along the spine of a burned, battered country, your little boy is either alive or dead. You have to know. You have to find an end to it all. One hope. The sky crawls with thick, venomous cloud. and burning red rain. The land is a scorched sprawl of rubble and corpses. Rats have risen from the depths to gorge on the carrion. A strange, glittering dust coats everything. The dust hides a terrible secret. New horrors are taking root. You walk on. One chance.

The Concert Pianist

Philip Morahan is a great pianist who cannot play the piano. A record deal looms, a recital series is nigh, but Philip can barely look at the instrument. For suddenly it seems as though the sacrifices he has made in the name of his art have cost too much. At fifty two he is single, childless, wretchedly alone. Music has kept him from life. And when a bad review calls even his achievement as a pianist into question, he is in freefall. In the turmoil that follows, Philip's quest to reconcile the needs of the man and the compulsions of the musician leads to a headlong unravelling, comic in its indignity. He is thoroughly deconstructed by ex-girlfriends, challenged by his protégé, all but tortured by his agent - mere preparation for the real task. To recover the power of his talent, and the capacity for love, Philip must first draw close to the central tragedy of his life.

London Revenant is a dark and magical exploration of London and the tenebrous world that lies beneath it. A madman is pushing people in front of Tube trains. Adam Buckley has a feeling it might be someone he knows. But that is the least of his worries. His narcolepsy is worsening, sucking him into an uncertain, twilight state. He sees people at parties he has no memory of, but who seem to know him. Deep within London’s sprawling Underground, he sees shadowy figures beckoning him into tunnels not shown on any map. His friends are drifting away, intent on chasing down insane, uncharted zones hidden within the capital, and they seem to be succumbing to a strange wasting disease. The suggestion of a half-remembered life and the encroaching shadow of violence threatens to engulf Adam and everyone he knows, unless he can unveil his true identity and that of his stalking nemesis. Conrad Williams’ masterful novel peels back layer upon layer of the city’s skin to reveal the grinning skull that lies beneath.

Multilingualism and the Twentieth-Century Novel

This book argues that the Anglophone novel in the twentieth century is, in fact, always multilingual. Rooting its analysis in modern Europe and the Caribbean, it recognises that monolingualism, not multilingualism, is a historical and global rarity, and argues that this fact must inform our study of the novel, even when it remains notionally Anglophone. Drawing principally upon four authors – Joseph Conrad, Jean Rhys, Wilson Harris and Junot Díaz – this study argues that a close engagement with the novel reveals a series of ways to apprehend, depict and theorise various kinds of language diversity. In so doing, it reveals the presence of the multilingual as a powerful shaping force for the direction of the novel from 1900 to the present day which cuts across and complicates current understandings of modernist, postcolonial and global literatures.

For Josh, falling in love does not fit in with his rock and roll lifestyle. And falling for someone who believes in mermaids? Who wants to be one? Well, he wasn't expecting that, either. But the sea is deep with mysteries. Sometimes they wash ashore, whispered in the hush of a quiet tide, and all you have to do is listen. Other times you have to explore the dark beneath the surface yourself, unsure of what you might find...
