Hybrid environments for universities
This publication is the result of an international and interdisciplinary expert meeting at Technische Universität Berlin, in March 2020. The aim of the expert meeting was to collaboratively write and publish a book, within five days, on the central question: Which organizational structures and processes at universities support a strategic as well as innovative campus development? As experts with an interdisciplinary background including the social sciences, public real estate, urban planning, architecture and landscape architecture, we could examine the question from a holistic perspective and gain new insights. The resulting manifesto states necessary steps and strategies to create innovative and sustainable hybrid environments for universities. It addresses all decision makers – executives, practitioners and contributors alike – as all of us face the challenge of limited resources and needing to do more with less.
The Dynamic Landscape
The Dynamic Landscape advances a fusion of scientific and ecological planning design philosophy that can address the need for more sustainable designed landscapes. It is a major statement on the design, implementation and management of ecologically inspired landscape vegetation.

"Viel herrlich und schöne Gärten"
Trotz der langen qualitativ und quantitativ ergiebigen Geschichte der Gartenkunst und der Gartenkultur im Wiener Raum liegen bisher kaum Veröffentlichungen dazu vor. Historische Gärten und Parks als wichtige Beiträge zur Kunst-und Kulturgeschichte zählen jedoch zum kulturellen Erbe von Wien und verdienen daher verstärkte Aufmerksamkeit. Mit diesem Buch wird in chronologischer Abfolge die Gartengeschichte dieser Stadt seit der frühen Siedlungstätigkeit bis ins erste Drittel des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts ausführlich und anschaulich anhand von charakteristischen Beispielen erzählt.

Was ist gute Landschaftsarchitektur? – Undine Giseke, Norbert Kühn, Cordula Loidl-Reisch und Jürgen Weidinger antworten in Auseinandersetzung mit den Konzepten Urbaner Metabolismus, Designing Urban Nature, Alltagstauglichkeit und Atmosphäre. Mit den Konzepten soll etwas verstanden und sollen zugleich Impulse für das Entwerfen gegeben werden. Das kennzeichnet eine besondere Form der Reflexion, die hier als landschaftsarchitektonisches Denken bezeichnet wird. What is good landscape architecture? — Undine Giseke, Norbert Kühn, Cordula Loidl-Reisch, and Jürgen Weidinger provide answers to this question, examining the concepts of urban metabolism, designing urban nature, suitability for daily use, and atmosphere. Their articles seek to bring clarity and provide inspiration for design work. This characterizes a special form of reflection that is referred to here as landscape-architectural thinking.
Campus Salzufer
Die TU Berlin möchte ihren Standort am Salzufer, ehemals Severingelände, zu einem Campus ausbauen. Das Gelände weist auf Grund früherer kleinindustrieller Nutzung und seiner heterogenen städtebaulichen Struktur in Anbetracht des heutigen städtischen Gefüges ein großes Potential zur Nachverdichtung auf. Dadurch eröffnet sich die Möglichkeit, die Identität des Standorts zu prägen und ein zeitgemäßes Gesicht der TU an diesem Standort zu schaffen. Anhand studentischer Entwurfsprojekte der Architektur und der Landschaftsarchitektur werden vielseitige Szenarien einer möglichen Entwicklung aufgezeigt. The Technical University of Berlin plans to develop its location at Salzufer, former Severingelände. Because of initially existing small scale industries and a heterogenous urban structure the area shows in the present urban environment potential for redensification. This condition allows to shape the identity of the location and to establish an contemporary image of the University. Several collegiate design projects in architecture and landscape architecture display various settings of a possible development in different scales.

Als Technische Universität verstehen wir unter nachhaltige Entwicklung “klassischen” Themen wie Ökologie und Effizienz, aber auch Inter-/Transdisziplinarität, komplexe gesellschaftliche Problemstellungen, Interkulturalität, Anti-Diskriminierung, Partizipation, sozial-ökologische Transformation und dergleichen. Der Nachhaltigkeitsbericht wird darauf fokussieren, welchen Beitrag die TU zum Erreichen der 17 Zielen einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung der Vereinten Nationen (SDG) leistet. Der Nachhaltigkeitsbericht versteht sich als Fortentwicklung der Umweltberichte der TU Berlin. As a technical university we view sustainable development holistically, considering “classical” issues such as ecology and efficiency but also inter/transdisciplinarity, complex social issues, interculturalism, antidiscrimination, participation, socio-ecological transformation, and so forth. The Sustainability Report focuses on TU Berlin’s contributions to achieving the 17 sustainable development goals (SDG) of the United Nations. The Sustainability Report is to be viewed as a further development of TU Berlin’s environmental reports.
