In the Third Reich, political dissidents were not the only ones liable to be punished for their crimes. Their parents, siblings and relatives also risked reprisals. This concept - known as Sippenhaft – was based in ideas of blood and purity. This definitive study surveys the threats, fears and infliction of this part of the Nazi system of terror.

Beyond Words

In pragmatics, it is widely accepted that the overall meaning of an utterance performed as part of a verbal interchange is basically underdetermined by the meaning of the sentence uttered. What counts as having been said for most contemporary authors goes far beyond sentence meaning. Rather, it has to be considered as a complex utterance level combining semantic knowledge and context-driven, pragmatic information as an integrated whole. The focus of the present book lies on central questions about the nature, the function and the acquisition of pragmatic inferencing strategies. The question of the relation between the explicit and the implicit side of verbal communication and its mutual deli...

The Parachute Paradox tells the life story of artist Steve Sabella (*1975), who was born in Jerusalem's Old City and raised under Israeli occupation. After living through both intifadas, being kidnapped in Gaza, and learning to navigate Palestinian and Israeli culture, he feels in exile at home. For him, the occupation attaches each Palestinian to an Israeli, as if in a tandem jump. The Israeli is always in control, placing the Palestinian under threat in a never-ending hostage situation. He realizes he has two options: either surrender or unbuckle his harness.Blurring fact and fiction, love and loss, the memoir traces one man's arduous search for liberation from within, through a confrontation with his colonized imagination.Limited Edition of 1250 with handwritten numeration.

Non-canonical Passives

This volume contains a selection of papers dealing with constructions that have a passive-like interpretation but do not seem to share all the properties with canonical passives. The fifteen chapters of this volume raise important questions concerning the proper characterization of the universal properties of passivization and reflect the current discussion in this area, covering syntactic, semantic, psycho-linguistic and typological aspects of the phenomenon, from different theoretical perspectives and in different language families and backed up in most cases by extensive corpora and experimental studies.

The photographer Nicolaus Schmidt shows New York from an unusual perspective. A new form of city life whirls through the urban canyons of the megacity. In the midst of this hectic activity, living sculptures appear to emerge from a different time dimension. This illustrated book, which is also an urban photography tour through New York, shows break dancers from the Bronx and Brooklyn who see the city as their stage.Examples include the two young dancers who display their adventurous leaps on an express train journey through the New York subway system. In the second section of the book, Schmidt presents striking portraits of the dancers and describes their extraordinary life stories and his very personal experiences with them.English and German text.

Roman Signer - sculpting in time : [anlässlich der Ausstellung "Sculpting in Time", gemeinsam von St. Paul St und Artspace in Auckland ...]

Roman Signer is one of the most important and influential contemporary Swiss artists. Over many decades, in a great variety of ways, he has single-mindedly researched the aspect of time with regard to the meaning of sculpture. His spectacular explosions made him famous, and his reputation as an innovative and unique artist was secured, at the very latest, by his participation in Skulpturen Projekte, Münster 1997, and the Venice Biennial in 1999 representing Switzerland. In this book Brian Butler and Leonhard Emmerling develop a new interpretation of Signer's work by concentrating on the video pieces and by attempting to shed light on the temporal aspect of his work using literature and philosophy as points of reference. Published on the occasion of the exhibition Roman Signer: Sculpting in Time, March - May 2008 at ST PAUL Street Gallery and ARTSPACE, Auckland.
