This book studies the role of subterranean spaces in literary works about Mexico City. It analyzes how underground spaces such as the subway, the sewage system, tunnels, crypts, and the subsoil itself relate to the whole of the city in a body of works published after 1985, the year of the deadliest earthquake in the capital’s history. The texts belong to the most important genres in urban literature (the novel, the short story, and the crónica) and demonstrate the crucial role played by the underground in contemporary imaginings of the megalopolis, as it condenses and confronts the tensions that run through them. This central idea is developed through four analytical chapters focusing on the political, ecological, historical, and aesthetic dimension of subterranean imaginaries.
The study examines cultural effects of various colonial systems of government in the Spanish- and French-speaking Caribbean in a little investigated period of transition: from the French Revolution to the abolition of slavery in Cuba (1789–1886). This book focuses on one of the main issues of our time in the Humanities and Social Sciences as it analyzes the impact of current global migrations on new forms of living together and the formation of identities and homes. Using a transdisciplinary and transcultural approach the contributions shed fresh light upon key concepts such as ‘hybrid-performative diaspora’, ‘transidentities’,‘ hospitality’, ‘belonging’, ‘emotion’, ‘body,’ and ‘desire’. Those concepts are discussed in the context of Cuban, US-American, Maghrebian, Moroccan, Spanish, Catalan, French, Turkish, Jewish, Argentinian, Indian, and Italian literatures, cultures and religions.
Postkoloniale Studien setzen sich kritisch mit kolonialen Gesellschaftsstrukturen und Repräsentationen von Andersheit bzw. Eigenem auseinander, die sich bis in die Gegenwart fortschreiben. Für das Selbstverständnis der ‚westlichen Gesellschaften‘ so zentrale Unterscheidungen wie Tradition/Moderne, Orient/Okzident, Natur/Kultur, Eigenes/Fremdes etc. stehen dabei zur Disposition. Der Band veranschaulicht die Vielstimmigkeit des postkolonialen Diskurses, indem er einerseits einen orientierenden Überblick über die zentralen Werke und AutorInnen der Postcolonial Studies, wie etwa Edward W. Said, Homi K. Bhabha, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Stuart Hall oder bell hooks, und ihre ideengeschichtlichen Referenzen verschafft. Andererseits wird die Rezeptionsgeschichte postkolonialer Perspektiven in geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen nachgezeichnet: u.a. in Literatur-, Politik-, Medien-, Religionswissenschaft, Ethnologie, Soziologie oder auch Kunstgeschichte. Der Band versteht sich nicht nur als Nachschlagewerk für Studierende und Interessierte; er leistet auch einen eigenen Beitrag zur Theoriebildung.
„Dritter Raum“, „Hybridität“, „Mimikry“ oder „Übersetzung“: Homi K. Bhabha, einer der einflussreichsten und innovativsten postkolonialen Theoretiker der Gegenwart, prägt in seinen Untersuchungen ebenso schillernde wie voraussetzungsreiche Metaphern für ein neues Denken von Kulturkontakt und kulturellen Mischungen. Seine hochtheoretisierten Reflexionen speisen sich dabei aus Theorie und Kunst: Einerseits verortet Bhabha sein Denken in der postkolonialen, poststrukturalistischen Literatur- und Kulturtheorie, andererseits lässt er sich von literarischen und künstlerischen Artefakten inspirieren und gewinnt aus ihnen neue Bilder, die die aktuelle Situation der globalen Migration jenseits von kultureliminierender Assimilation oder kulturrelativistischer Multikulturalität neu zu denken erlauben. Bhabha verfolgt damit eine konsequente Dekonstruktion kultureller Dichotomien und entwickelt neue Denkfiguren für komplexe kulturelle Begegnungen.
