Unter Beobachtung | Under Surveillance
The socialist states of Eastern Europe closely and suspiciously observed the expellee organizations that had emerged in the Federal Republic since the late 1940s, including their political activities. This volume, for the first time, takes a look at this ‘enemy and foreign observation’ by the intelligence services, using various case studies from the GDR, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and Yugoslavia. It examines what the secret services knew about the expellee functionaries and their past, and asks what information was collected and how it was used. In addition, the role of the Germans who remained in the socialist states and the Aussiedler, who came to the FRG and formed a link between the expellees and their ‘old homeland’, is examined. The volume thus makes an important contribution to research on the perception of the expellee organizations in the socialist states, on the work of the security services, and on bilateral contacts during the ‘Cold War’.
The Radical Right During Crisis
While the COVID-19 pandemic overshadowed all else and would quickly have a lasting impact on our daily lives, other events related to the radical right in 2020 soon surfaced. From terrorist attacks in Germany and India to anti-mask protests across the U.S. and Europe, radical right violence escalated in the midst of circulating conspiracy theories and disinformation. Neighbourhood Perceptions of the Ukraine Crisis
Recent events in Ukraine and Russia and the subsequent incorporation of Crimea into the Russian state, with the support of some circles of inhabitants of the peninsula, have shown that the desire of people to belong to the Western part of Europe should not automatically be assumed. Discussing different perceptions of the Ukrainian-Russian war in neighbouring countries, this book offers an analysis of the conflicts and issues connected with the shifting of the border regions of Russia and Ukraine to show how ’material’ and ’psychological’ borders are never completely stable ideas. The contributors – historians, sociologists, anthropologists and political scientists from across Europe – use an interdisciplinary and comparative approach to explore the different national and transnational perceptions of a possible future role for Russia.

The Russian Revolution of 1917 has been one of the most important events of modern history. It changed the course of the events not only in Russia but, on a wider scale, across the world while it influenced the flow of history throughout the twentieth century until the fall of the Soviet Union and, to some extent, well beyond this time. Radical change in Russia triggered social revolutions and reformations across Europe, while authoritarian systems shaped their societies according to the Russian model. Odată cu deschiderea arhivelor fostei Securităţi, au ieşit la iveală detalii legate de racolarea de către autorităţile vremii a unor persoane cu concepţii radicale de dreapta, între care şi militanţi legionari în exil. Regimul comunist de la Bucureşti ajunsese într-un punct în care legitimarea şi susţinerea pe plan intern şi extern deveniseră priorităţi, iar soluţia era relativ simplă: în ţară trebuia creat un duşman al unităţii naţionale – minoritatea maghiară a devenit rapid o ţintă –, iar în străinătate urmau să fie atraşi reprezentanţi de marcă ai emigraţiei româneşti. Volumul evidenţiază tendinţa xenofobă şi naţionalistă ce a caracterizat perioada cultului personalităţii lui Nicolae Ceauşescu, oferind informaţii inedite despre legionari şi represiunea stalinistă, asasinate şi răzbunări sau lupta partizanilor anticomunişti.
