Highlights of Astronomy
Even the casual reader cannot fail to notice the somewhat uneven presentation of the contributions contributians to this volume, in particular what concerns the st style. yle. A closer scrutiny will also reveal that whereas the English language is certainly the preferred vehicle for commu nication in astronomy, it is not the mother tongue of all contributors. However, while editing this volume I have felt that it would be more important to assure a speedy publication than to attempt to achieve a high degree of uniformity, which would anyhow be extremely diffi cult with more than 100 eontributing contributing authors. When published, this book should stiIl still be a tool for aetive active research, not a museum pieee. piece. I am grateful to the organizers and editors of the individual sections seetions for having produced produeed their parts with within in the allotted time, and with a high degree of professionalism. Upper Main Sequence Stars with Anomalous Abundances
This volume contains papers presented at IAU Colloquium No. 90. at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in May of 1985. A few additional contributions are included from authors who for various reasons were unable to attend the meeting. Four years have passed since the last major international conference on chemically peculiar stars of the upper main sequence was held in Liege. Belgium in 1981. Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of the literature concerning all aspects of astronomy, astrophysics, and their border fields. It is devoted to the recording, summarizing, and indexing of relevant publications throughout the world. Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts is prepared by a special department of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union. Volume 59/60 - the fifth Cumulative Index of Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts - comprises author, subject, and object indexes to volumes 49 - 58. Thus, the astronomical and astrophysical literature of the five-year period 1989 - 1993 is covered by this volume.
The Cowley Fathers in Philadelphia
This is the story of an Anglican Religious Community established in the parish of Cowley, Oxford, England in 1866--the Society of S. John the Evangelist. From their geographic location they soon became known as "The Cowley Fathers". Four years later they expanded their work in America, first in Boston and later in Philadelphia where they were invited to take charge of S. Clement's Church. Soon after their arrival there was suspicion and misunderstanding on the part of many in the Diocese of Pennsylvania who did not accept this mostly foreign group of priests from England. The deep compassion for the poor and marginalized, the relief work in the face of tragedy and disaster won their critics over and eventually opposition ceased. The Cowley Fathers whose influence attracted the poor and wealthy soon spread beyond the confines of the parish. Their ministry through teaching, preaching, retreats, missions and spiritual counsel attracted many. Interest in the Society grew. By the end of the 19th century there were branch houses in India, South Africa and Scotland. This book offers a unique account of the SSJE Community in Philadelphia and the parish they served.
