Memoir/PhilosophyThis is a book about identifying connections between present and past, self and history, humans and others. Beginning with reflections on a life course, it then portrays how the contingencies and historical events experienced by the author translate into the person he became and what he came to value. For those who think about how their lives took shape and turned into beliefs and ways of being, this combination of memoir and contemplation of Nature, ethical perspectives, and the recent history of our beleaguered country will help make sense of their own journey.

When this book was first published in 1997 there were upwards of 10,000,000 dogs and cats being killed annually in animal shelters and by animal control agencies across the country. Today that figure has dropped by at least 70%. Disposable Animals was a significant part of a growing movement to stop killing healthy animals and to face and change the sources of the problem. The book begins with analysis of how it came to be that "disposable" animals existed and how animal welfarists betrayed their obligation to true animal welfare and defended killing (erroneously called "euthanasia") the surplus millions. The discussion then moves into the plight of other animals in American society and how using them for human purposes, without thinking of their own purposes in living, has led to massive cruelty and contributed to alienation of humans from the natural world. A new ethic, as described here, should characterize new relations between us and the life community.

Reverence for Existence

This book offers an examination and reflection upon the bare fact of existence in and of itself, and of the ways in which humans can come to apprehend and relate to its daily reality. We come to realize that existence is deep with meanings and that the ways in which humans experience it, the respect they pay, makes all the difference in how both the world and their lives go. Forests are more than lumber, rivers more than resources, animals more than food and entertainment. What the author calls an attitude of reverence toward existence, toward being, opens these insights and paths to meaning. The book asks, "What is fundamental and essential in our lived reality here on Earth? What is the human part in existence and the most fitting way to place ourselves and make meaning in our lives?" And it asserts that we are immersed in signs of truth and goodness every day, supported by Nature's spiritual richness and life in caring communities. Reverence for Existence reflects on these matters with humility and is informed by the wisdom found in many voices, ancient and modern.

A Voice for Animals

Animals are here with us and not for us. We can do better for our animal friends when we work together collectively and individually to make a difference; by joining hands in this next great, important social justice movement. A Voice for Animals offers insight on animal issues and the animal rights movement. The first part of the book examines the close connection we share with our beloved companion animals, and the plight of homeless animals. It bridges the gap between beloved pets and homeless pets in shelters. It offers solutions to end the shelter debacle. The second part discusses the lives of other species: farm animals, animals in research, animals in captivity, and wildlife. This book provides heartfelt real life animal stories, celebrates animal victories, and explores the deep connection of animals to humans and our biological need to share our lives with them. It inspires readers to take action and get motivated for animals: adopt animals from shelters and rescues, live a cruelty-free lifestyle, and go vegan. This book advocates for the better treatment of animals by inviting you to gain an understanding of the special human-animal bond.

Critical Theory and Animal Liberation

Critical Theory and Animal Liberation

Critical Theory and Animal Liberation is the first collection to approach our relationship with other animals from the critical or "left" tradition in political and social thought. Breaking with past treatments that have framed the problem as one of "animal rights," the authors instead depict the exploitation and killing of other animals as a political question of the first order. The contributions highlight connections between our everyday treatment of animals and other forms of social power, mass violence, and domination, from capitalism and patriarchy to genocide, fascism, and ecocide. Contributors include well-known writers in the field as well as scholars in other areas writing on animals for the first time. Among other things, the authors apply Freud's theory of repression to our relationship to the animal, debunk the "Locavore" movement, expose the sexism of the animal defense movement, and point the way toward a new transformative politics that would encompass the human and animal alike.

No Color Is My Kind

In 1959, a Black man named Eldrewey Stearns was beaten by Houston police after being stopped for a traffic violation. He was not the first to suffer such brutality, but the incident sparked Stearns’s conscience and six months later he was leading the first sit-in west of the Mississippi River. No Color Is My Kind, first published in 1997, introduced readers to Stearns, including his work as a civil rights leader and lawyer in Houston’s desegregation movement between 1959 and 1963. This remarkable and important history, however, was nearly lost to bipolar affective disorder. Stearns was a fifty-two-year-old patient in a Galveston psychiatric hospital when Thomas Cole first met him in 1984...
