Dentre as diversas situações de contato havidas, a do português com línguas africanas assume maior relevância por ter sido generalizada no tempo e no espaço. Africanos e afro-descendentes, no período que se estende do século XVII ao século XIX, correspondem juntos a cerca de 60% da população brasileira (cf. MUSSA, 1991).
