Evadarea generalului român Ion Mihai Pacepa, la 29 iulie 1978, este una dintre cele mai importante și spectaculoase operațiuni de informații desfășurate în timpul Războiului Rece. Obținerea de azil politic în Occident de către generalul român de atunci a condus jocul de spionaj subteran dintre cele două blocuri politice la o transformare radicală: de la intensitatea redusă a tatonărilor și păstrarea unei distanțe prudente la o înfruntare fățișă și sângeroasă. Pentru România socialistă, momentul fugii lui Pacepa în Statele Unite ale Americii a reprezentat un moment de cotitură. Peste noapte, Ceaușescu și-a pierdut nu doar principalul consilier de încredere, ci și pe cel care, cu o mare abilitate și utilizând metode uneori neortodoxe, reușise să creeze rețeaua necesară pentru atragerea de resurse și tehnologie din Occident.
