This book presents research concerning the effects of the Camino to Finisterre on the daily lives of the populations who live along the route, and the heritagization processes that exploitation of the Camino for tourism purposes involves. Grassroots Memorials
Grassroots memorials have become major areas of focus during times of trauma, danger, and social unrest. These improvised memorial assemblages continue to display new and more dynamic ways of representing collective and individual identities and in doing so reveal the steps that shape the national memories of those who struggle to come to terms with traumatic loss. This volume focuses on the hybrid quality of these temporary memorials as both monuments of mourning and as focal points for protest and expression of discontent. The broad range of case studies in this volume include anti-mafia shrines, Theo van Gogh’s memorial, September 11th memorials, March 11th shrines in Madrid, and Carlo Giuliani memorials in Genoa.

El libro es producto de la labor de un grupo de investigación que, en el departamento de antropología del CSIC, trabaja desde hace algún tiempo en el análisis antropológico del patrimonio cultural material e inmaterial en la sociedad actual. El proyecto recoge trabajos interdisciplinarios (antropología, historia del arte, historia, psiquiatría) con el doble objetivo de mostrar las diferentes maneras en que la fotografía puede ayudar a comprender el mundo exterior, creando una idea racional o científica de él, y de prestar atención la fotografía como una forma de "reconocimiento", identificación y comprensión, no sólo de la realidad que nos rodea, sino de nosotros mismos. La elección del título refleja nuestra deuda intelectual con la obra literaria y visual de John Berger. Al mismo tiempo, todo el libro es un homenaje a la mirada de Cristina García Rodero, capaz de "interpretar sin palabras " las relaciones entre el cuerpo, los rituales y la vida.
