Teaching and Research in the Knowledge-Based Society

This book addresses common themes relating to the teaching and research nexus in the knowledge-based society through historical, comparative and empirical perspectives. It analyzes traditions of academic systems and national initiatives, and other factors affecting the main characteristics of the teaching and research nexus in eleven case countries from Asia, Europe, North America and South America. The book identifies key challenges of the academy, and trends in relation to the teaching and research nexus. The focus of case countries is on the attitudes and activities of the academy, as reported in the international comparative survey “The Academic Profession in the Knowledge-Based Society” (APIKS) in 2017-18. The data compared with previous international comparative survey “The Changing Academic Profession” (CAP) in 2007-08 in most chapters to make time series changes. The book discusses the teaching and research nexus in the case countries similar to and different from those of reference countries drawing on findings from the international databanks of the two international comparative surveys and previous research.

Convergence as Adaptivity

Convergence as Adaptivity

Convergence as Adaptivity explores under what conditions policy convergence may be seen an indication of policy autonomy. Zhiyuan Wang advances a theory that argues states substitute unwanted policy changes dictated by globalization with politically feasible ones. Investigating bilateral investment treaties, preferential trade agreements, corporate taxation, and central bank independence as policy substitutes, he provides both quantitative and qualitative evidence to substantiate the core theoretical argument and explores under what conditions policy convergence can be an indication of policy autonomy and through what manner. The result is a systemic and rigorous exploration of the idea of policy substitution and its consequences under globalization. Wang's findings will be of interest to scholars, practitioners, and concerned citizens hoping to deepen their understanding of globalization as well as useful for undergraduate and graduate courses in international relations, international and comparative political economy, and globalization.

What makes domestic work a bad job, even after efforts to formalize and improve working conditions? Erynn Masi de Casanova's case study, based partly on collaborative research conducted with Ecuador's pioneer domestic workers' organization, examines three reasons for persistent exploitation. First, the tasks of social reproduction are devalued. Second, informal work arrangements escape regulation. And third, unequal class relations are built into this type of employment. Accessible to advocates and policymakers as well as academics, this book provides both theoretical discussions about domestic work and concrete ideas for improving women's lives. Drawing on workers' stories of lucha, trabajo...
