This handbook provides a thorough overview of the current state of knowledge in this area. The first part of the book includes nine surveys and tutorials on the principal data mining techniques that have been applied in education. The second part presents a set of 25 case studies that give a rich overview of the problems that EDM has addressed. With contributions by well-known researchers from a variety of fields, the book reflects the multidisciplinary nature of the EDM community. It helps education experts understand what types of questions EDM can address and helps data miners understand what types of questions are important to educational design and educational decision making.
While the Spanish conquistadors have been stereotyped as rapacious treasure seekers, many firstcomers to the New World realized that its greatest wealth lay in the native populations whose labor could be harnessed to build a new Spain. Hence, the early arrivals in Mexico sought encomiendas—"a grant of the Indians of a prescribed indigenous polity, who were to provide the grantee (the encomendero) tribute in the form of commoditiesand service in return for protection and religious instruction." This study profiles the 506 known encomenderos in New Spain (present-day Mexico) during the years 1521-1555, using their life histories to chart the rise, florescence, and decline of the encomienda system. The first part draws general conclusions about the actual workings of the encomienda system. The second part provides concise biographies of the encomenderos themselves.

The proceeding is a collection of research papers presented at the International Conference on Data Engineering 2013 (DaEng-2013), a conference dedicated to address the challenges in the areas of database, information retrieval, data mining and knowledge management, thereby presenting a consolidated view to the interested researchers in the aforesaid fields. The goal of this conference was to bring together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to focus on advanced on data engineering concepts and establishing new collaborations in these areas. The topics of interest are as follows but are not limited to: • Database theory • Data management • Data mining and warehousing • Data privacy & security • Information retrieval, integration and visualization • Information system • Knowledge discovery in databases • Mobile, grid and cloud computing • Knowledge-based • Knowledge management • Web data, services and intelligence
This volume of Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing contains accepted papers presented in the main track of ECC 2015, the Second Euro-China Conference on Intelligent Data Analysis and Applications. The aim of ECC is to provide an internationally respected forum for scientific research in the broad area of intelligent data analysis, computational intelligence, signal processing, and all associated applications of AIs. The second edition of ECC was organized jointly by VSB - Technical University of Ostrava, Czech Republic, and Fujian University of Technology, Fuzhou, China. The conference, organized under the patronage of Mr. Miroslav Novak, President of the Moravian-Silesian Region, took place in late June and early July 2015 in the Campus of the VSB - Technical University of Ostrava, Czech Republic.
This book focuses on research and development aspects of building data analytics workflows that address various challenges of e-learning applications. This book represents a guideline for building a data analysis workflow from scratch. Each chapter presents a step of the entire workflow, starting from an available dataset and continuing with building interpretable models, enhancing models, and tackling aspects of evaluating engagement and usability. The related work shows that many papers have focused on machine learning usage and advancement within e-learning systems. However, limited discussions have been found on presenting a detailed complete roadmap from the raw dataset up to the engagement and usability issues. Practical examples and guidelines are provided for designing and implementing new algorithms that address specific problems or functionalities. This roadmap represents a potential resource for various advances of researchers and practitioners in educational data mining and learning analytics.
Winner of the 2021 Heritage Publication Award from the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division Nación Genízara examines the history, cultural evolution, and survival of the Genízaro people. The contributors to this volume cover topics including ethnogenesis, slavery, settlements, poetics, religion, gender, family history, and mestizo genetics. Fray Angélico Chávez defined Genízaro as the ethnic term given to indigenous people of mixed tribal origins living among the Hispano population in Spanish fashion. They entered colonial society as captives taken during wars with Utes, Apaches, Comanches, Kiowas, Navajos, and Pawnees. Genízaros comprised a third of the population by 1800. Many assimilated into Hispano and Pueblo society, but others in the land-grant communities maintained their identity through ritual, self-government, and kinship. Today the persistence of Genízaro identity blurs the lines of distinction between Native and Hispanic frameworks of race and cultural affiliation. This is the first study to focus exclusively on the detribalized Native experience of the Genízaro in New Mexico.
