Spatial Information Theory
This book constitutes the proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Spatial Information Theory, COSIT 2013, held in Scarborough, UK, in September 2013. The 28 papers presented in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 62 full paper submissions. The following topics are addressed: spatial change, wayfinding and assistance, representing spatial data, handling language data, spatial language and computation, spatial ontology, spatial reasoning and representation.
Language contact
Contact linguistics is the overarching term for a highly diversified field with branches that connect to such widely divergent areas as historical linguistics, typology, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and grammatical theory. Because of this diversification, there is a risk of fragmentation and lack of interaction between the different subbranches of contact linguistics. Nevertheless, the different approaches share the general goal of accounting for the results of interacting linguistic systems. This common goal opens up possibilities for active communication, cooperation, and coordination between the different branches of contact linguistics. This book, therefore, explores the extent to which contact linguistics can be viewed as a coherent field, and whether the advances achieved in a particular subfield can be translated to others. In this way our aim is to encourage a boundary-free discussion between different types of specialists of contact linguistics, and to stimulate cross-pollination between them.
Spatial Information Theory
This book constitutes the proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Spatial Information Theory, COSIT 2015, held in Santa Fee, NM, USA, in October 2015. Mutual Intelligibility Between Closely Related Languages
This book provides a detailed overview of research on mutual intelligibility between closely related languages. The book is organized around three sections which explore different facets of mutual intelligibility research. The first section outlines how to measure levels of intelligibility and its linguistic and extra-linguistic determinants. The second part grapples with questions and issues which arise once the measuring tools are established. A final section reflects on the practical and theoretical value of studying mutual intelligibility, including issues related to language planning and policy, such as cultural, communicative, educational, and economical matters.
The Middle Voice and Connected Constructions in Ibero-Romance
The reflexive constructions that are the focus of this book are the constructions broadly described with the term “middle”: i.e., those that can appear in all persons, and in which the reflexive marker (RM) cannot be understood as a full referential pronoun. One goal of this study is to provide a corpus-based typology of middle and related uses that allow us to compare the behaviour of the RM in these constructions with previous typological accounts, where competing models (based either on changes of diathesis or on the semantics of the verbal event) can be found. Vowel Length from Latin to Romance
This book looks at the changes that took place in vowel length during the development of Latin into the various Romance languages and dialects. It draws on extensive data from a wide range of dialects and presents a new account of these changes, which has implications for a number of issues in Romance historical phonology.
