This limited edition artist's book is based on Cyprien Gaillard's Geographical Analogies, a collection of 900 Polaroids, carefully and rigorously arranged in a total of 100 showcases, telling many stories about landscapes, monuments, modernist buildings, and architectonic utopias, and just as many stories about decay, destruction, and devastation. 'Gaillard's epic work, outmodedly analog ... reflects a computation of time that seems to have disappeared... In the disintegrating medium of Polaroid photography the aspect of disappearance inherent to time is documented and allegedly temporarily halted - until in foreseeable time these originals too will have disappeared beyond recall. ...Decay, ...

The Recovery of Discovery

Preserving a monument goes hand in hand with destroying it. In order to preserve architecture, cultural monuments and relics, they are often re-located, allowing urban displacement to arise – leading to the disappearance of the concept of autonomous geography and archaeology. The dislocation of a monument does not only alter the history of its original location, but also leads to a radical re-interpretation of the monument itself. For his exhibition in 2011 at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin, Cyprien Gaillard created a new work containing complex implications, which will only be revealed through an act of complete defiance.Similar to public amnesia, lost in the hopeless interaction with the monument, the gradual destruction becomes a part of the aesthetic of resistance. This catalogue depicts the gradual destruction of the sculpture.Included is a conversation with Cyprien Gaillard and Susanne Pfeffer.English and German text.

Hyper!

What happens when musicians make use of ideas and strategies from the art world? And what kind of pictures result when painters are influenced by music? To be interested in other people's lives, to follow the unknown, to copy it, to use it in one's own work--in short, to cross-map between the worlds of music and the visual arts: this is the subject of HYPER! A Journey into Art and Music curated by Max Dax, the former editor-in-chief of Spex and Electronic Beats. The book will include classic works such as Peter Saville's ground-breaking album cover for New Order's 1983 masterpiece Power, Corruption and Lies, and the narrative, minimalist imagery of Emil Schult on which the cover of K...

00s-- l'histoire d'une décennie qui n'est pas encore nommée

  • Categories: Art

"The curators of the ninth Lyon Biennial approached the task of mapping the moment in contemporary art playfully: by commissioning a polyphonic history and geography book. With 70 "players" from around the world, the "game" of how to define the decade unfolded via a series of delegations, invitations and programs in which artists proposed their responses and critics and curators sequenced and challenged them, in turn suggesting artists of their own. Reframing the unfolding present from within, creatively rethinking the role of the artist as well as that of serious play, and reconsidering the now-ubiquitous and decreasingly authoritative biennial exhibition, these myriad voices, framed by only a few rules, became participants in an exercise in collective self-determination. This lavishly illustrated publication, designed by the renowned Parisian firm M/M and edited by Biennial curators Hans Ulrich Obrist and Stephanie Moisdon, includes previously unpublished essays by Michel Houellebecq, Okwui Enwezor and Ralph Rugoff, and functions as a manual for "a decade yet to be named a present that is endlessly arriving.""--Publisher description.

TT is a publication documenting a collaborative public art installation by Cyprien Gaillard and Andro Wekua, installed in the Nutsubidze skybridge. The two-seater bench created from Kazbegi-sourced diabase sits in one of the alcoves along the public walkway. The publication features images of the sculpture and of Nutsubidze, along with two essays on the project by curator Marina Caron and artist and writer Salome Kokoladze. Installed in a heavily used, and architecturally distinct, public space, Gaillard and Wekua's sculpture offers a place for passersby to slow down, rest, or spend time. Specifically designed as a two-seater, the sculpture in part refers to the friendship shared by the two artists. The bench is a collaborative investigation into their shared interests in memory and place. Caron's essay begins with a description of the work and of the skybridge, going on to frame the piece through philosopher Henri Lefebvre's writing on public space. Kokoladze's essay looks at Gaillard and Wekua's work through contemporary approaches to public art that emphasize art's role in urban morphology.

GO RE-CYCLE!

Contemporary design must cope with the need to save resources and reduce soil consumption, answering at the same time to a widespread demand of heritage preservation. Its scope has therefore shifted from the probing of an utopian future to the interpretation of the past. The recent import within the architectural debate of the re-cycle concept and procedures promises to keep together the exigencies of environmental, economic and social sustainability with a renovated experimental momentum, both pragmatic and radical. The surprising potential of re-cycle as a design tool has been explored in a workshop held in Gorizia, which involved the student of the University of Trieste. Thoughts and projects produced in this intensive seminar show how widecan be the range of its application, from object to landscape, from matter to ideas, from interiors to urban spaces.
