Tragedy at Law
When an anonymous letter arrives for Mr Justice Barber, the High Court judge, warning of imminent revenge, he dismisses it as the work of a harmless lunatic. But then a second letter appears, followed by a poisoned box of the judge's favourite chocolates, and he begins to fear for his life.
An English Murder
A group of guests gather in a large country house, owned by the dying Lord Warbeck, who wants what is left of his family around him to celebrate what he assumes will be his last Christmas. The guests are a motley bunch, including Sir Julius Warbeck, Chancellor of the Exchequer, the wife of one of his underlings, the fascist son of the present Lord Warbeck, and the Chancellor's bodyguard. Also present is foreign historian Dr Bottwink, and the traditional faithful butler. When the first murder occurs, the house is cut off from the rest of the world by a heavy snowfall, and it is left to Sir Julius's bodyguard to initiate a preliminary investigation before contact can be made with the local police force.

Untimely Death
Francis Pettigrew, a retired London attorney, is on vacation with his wife in Exmoor. Francis neglected to tell his wife, Eleanor, that he used to spend many of his vacations when he was a child at Exmoor with his family. To be honest, he had almost forgotten his times there, but he did remember an incident which was still capable of giving him shivers. As a child, hiking through the wilds of Exmoor, he came upon the dead body of a man. Not knowing what to do, he ran away and never told anyone about it. His memory of the incident slowly faded since there were no repercussions that he didn’t tell anyone at the time. This time, while hiking through the moor, he stumbles over a body, and the same nightmare repeats itself. Now, however, he is a grown man and knows that he must seek help. When he finds and brings back the members of a hunt club, the body is no longer there.

An odd elderly man is found dead at an obscure country hotel. It would be most convenient if his overdose of sleeping medication were just an accident or even suicide. But is it that simple? Or is there a cold-blooded murderer at work? His family stands to lose a tidy sum in insurance money if the verdict is suicide--and the family can definitely use the money. Contrary to most mysteries where no one wants a murder to have happened, the heirs begin drumming up evidence to try to prove foul play. The amateur "sleuths" do find some interesting clues, but while they're beavering away, Inspector Mallett of Scotland Yard is following his own line of investigation.
