A Fixed-Point Farrago

This text provides an introduction to some of the best-known fixed-point theorems, with an emphasis on their interactions with topics in analysis. The level of exposition increases gradually throughout the book, building from a basic requirement of undergraduate proficiency to graduate-level sophistication. Appendices provide an introduction to (or refresher on) some of the prerequisite material and exercises are integrated into the text, contributing to the volume’s ability to be used as a self-contained text. Readers will find the presentation especially useful for independent study or as a supplement to a graduate course in fixed-point theory. The material is split into four parts: the first introduces the Banach Contraction-Mapping Principle and the Brouwer Fixed-Point Theorem, along with a selection of interesting applications; the second focuses on Brouwer’s theorem and its application to John Nash’s work; the third applies Brouwer’s theorem to spaces of infinite dimension; and the fourth rests on the work of Markov, Kakutani, and Ryll–Nardzewski surrounding fixed points for families of affine maps.

Generalized Functions And Convergence: Memorial Volume For Professor Jan Mikusinski

The conference was devoted to the memory of the late Professor Jan Mikusinski. The proceedings is divided into three parts. The first one contains biographical materials and memoirs about Professor Mikusinski and his work. The second part is devoted to the theory of generalized functions and the third to convergence structures.

Micropolar Theory of Elasticity

Micropolar Theory of Elasticity

The monograph "Micropolar Theory of Elasticity" is devoted to the asymmetric theory of elasticity and thermoelasticity, aiming at researchers and postgraduate students in solid mechanics and applied mathematics, as well as mechanical engineers. It offers various new results including the basic field equations, general methods of integration of basic equations, formulations of problems, as well as solutions to particular problems. The presented general solutions cover those of Galerkin, Green-Lamé and Papkovitch-Neuber type, whereas the formulations include the displacement-rotation problems as well as pure stress problems of asymmetric elastodynamics. Solutions to stationary 3D and 2D problems for a half-space, and singular solutions to 3D and 2D asymmetric elastodynamics and the thermoelasto-dynamics problems for an infinite space are given.

The second edition of this book updates and expands upon a historically important collection of mathematical problems first published in the United States by Birkhäuser in 1981. These problems serve as a record of the informal discussions held by a group of mathematicians at the Scottish Café in Lwów, Poland, between the two world wars. Many of them were leaders in the development of such areas as functional and real analysis, group theory, measure and set theory, probability, and topology. Finding solutions to the problems they proposed has been ongoing since World War II, with prizes offered in many cases to those who are successful. In the 35 years since the first edition published, se...

Arakelov Geometry over Adelic Curves

Arakelov Geometry over Adelic Curves

The purpose of this book is to build the fundament of an Arakelov theory over adelic curves in order to provide a unified framework for research on arithmetic geometry in several directions. By adelic curve is meant a field equipped with a family of absolute values parametrized by a measure space, such that the logarithmic absolute value of each non-zero element of the field is an integrable function on the measure space. In the literature, such construction has been discussed in various settings which are apparently transversal to each other. The authors first formalize the notion of adelic curves and discuss in a systematic way its algebraic covers, which are important in the study of heig...
