CALL and professionalisation: short papers from EUROCALL 2021
The 2021 EUROCALL conference engaged just under 250 speakers from 40 different countries. Cnam Paris and Sorbonne Université joined forces to host and organise the event despite the challenging context due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Originally programmed to be held on site in the heart of Paris, France, the EUROCALL organising team and executive committee agreed to opt for a blended and then for a fully online conference. The theme of the 2021 EUROCALL conference was “CALL & Professionalisation”. This volume, a selection of 54 short papers by some of the EUROCALL 2021 presenters, offers a combination of research studies as well as practical examples fairly representative of the theme of the conference.

Language Learning and Leisure
The study of informal involvement with additional languages has recently emerged as a dynamic research field in SLA. With the rapid development and spread of internet-based technologies, contact with foreign languages outside the classroom has become commonplace. While this can take multiple forms, online contents are a major driving force because they present learners with unprecedented opportunities for exposure to and use of target languages regardless of their physical location. Research from diverse geographical, educational and socio-economic contexts bring a rich variety of perspectives to this book. It explores these phenomena via a range of theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches, focusing particularly on individual differences and language development. The volume proposes that teachers in formal learning settings should seek to support and facilitate the development of these identities and practices, and it indicates means they can adopt to best do so.

Learner Support in Online Learning Environments
We are at a crucial time for the production and dissemination of knowledge – one in which the scientific community is questioning the nature of the digital humanities. Within this context, Learner Support in Online Learning Environments proposes, by taking into consideration the notion of assistance in a learning context, an original method of positioning digital resources for teachers, students and researchers in the humanities and social sciences. Questioning existing theoretical frameworks and prototypes, learner support in digital environments is presented as both a process and a result integrating a variety of resources. Some of these resources already exist, some may be adapted from existing objects and still others have yet to be imagined. The end goal is to facilitate both independent and group-based learning activities.
Migration and Language Education in Southern Europe
The entry of migrant populations to Europe, and especially to countries of Southern Europe, is expected to drastically change the make-up of state school classes as learners of various ages, ethnic backgrounds, and mother tongues are going to co-exist within the same educational setting. In Greece, in particular, the landscape of education has already started changing as a significant number of immigrant students have joined mainstream classrooms. This volume maps this new educational reality and its challenges, as Greek teachers are required, with very limited training and resources, to address those students’ educational and socio-emotional needs. All chapters are authored by Greek researchers who are actively involved in the study of refugees’ and immigrants’ education, their needs, and their educational, linguistic and political rights. Despite the fact that education for immigrants and refugees has become the focus of much research on a global level, the ongoing rapid rise of immigrant populations in Southern Europe has not been adequately researched. Recent Perspectives on Task-Based Language Learning and Teaching
The last three decades have witnessed a growth of interest in research on tasks from various perspectives and numerous books and collections of articles have been published focusing on the notion of task and its utility in different contexts. Nevertheless, what is lacking is a multi-faceted examination of tasks from different important perspectives. This edited volume, with four sections of three chapters each, views tasks and Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) from four distinct (but complementary) vantage points. In the first section, all chapters view tasks from a cognitive-interactionist angle with each addressing one key facet of either cognition or interaction (or both) in different contexts (CALL and EFL/ESL). Section two hinges on the idea that language teaching and learning is perhaps best conceptualized, understood, and investigated within a complexity theory framework which accounts for the dynamicity and interrelatedness of the variables involved. Viewing TBLT from a sociocultural lens is what connects the chapters included in the third section. Finally, the fourth section views TBLT from pedagogical and curricular vantage points.

À l’heure où la communauté scientifique s’interroge sur les humanités numériques, initiant un tournant au niveau des conditions de production et de diffusion des savoirs, Formes des aides pour le numérique propose, à travers l’approche de la notion d’aide en contexte d’apprentissage, une manière originale de positionner le rôle des ressources numériques dans les activités associées à l’enseignant, à l’apprenant et au chercheur en SHS. Objet de recherche questionnant plusieurs cadres théoriques et objet d’étude pouvant donner lieu à des prototypes/applications informatiques, l’aide numérique est présentée comme un résultat et un processus intégrant différentes ressources numériques. Certaines de ces ressources sont existantes, d’autres sont à adapter et d’autres enfin restent à imaginer. L’objectif est, d’une part, de faciliter des activités pouvant être réalisées seul, et, d’autre part, de réaliser de nouvelles activités avec la collaboration d’autres acteurs.
