Elliptic Partial Differential Equations From An Elementary Viewpoint: A Fresh Glance At The Classical Theory

This is a textbook that covers several selected topics in the theory of elliptic partial differential equations which can be used in an advanced undergraduate or graduate course. The book considers many important issues such as existence, regularity, qualitative properties, and all the classical topics useful in the wide world of partial differential equations. It also includes applications with interesting examples. The structure of the book is flexible enough to allow different chapters to be taught independently. The book is friendly, welcoming, and written for a newcomer to the subject. It is essentially self-contained, making it easy to read, and all the concepts are fully explained from scratch, combining intuition and rigor, and therefore it can also be read independently by students, with limited or no supervision.

Effects of Non-locality in Gravity and Quantum Theory

This thesis is devoted to the systematic study of non-local theories that respect Lorentz invariance and are devoid of new, unphysical degrees of freedom. Such theories are attractive for phenomenological applications since they are mostly unconstrained by current experiments. Non-locality has played an increasingly important role in the physics of the last decades, appearing in effective actions in quantum field theory, and arising naturally in string theory and non-commutative geometry. It may even be a necessary ingredient for quantum theories of gravity. It is a feature of quantum entanglement, and may even solve the long-standing black hole information loss problem. “Non-locality” i...

Karch’s Drug Abuse Handbook, Third Edition remains the quintessential compendium addressing the pharmacological, medical, and legal aspects of drugs and informing the forensic community of the latest scientific advances and emergent practices. For this edition, Dr. Karch has brought on clinical and forensic toxicology expert Dr. Bruce Goldberger, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Analytical Toxicology and president of the American Board of Forensic Toxicology, to serve as co-editor. In addition, world-renowned scientists and medical professionals have contributed their work and expertise in tackling the latest developments in drug testing, drug-related medical emergencies, and the drug tox...

An Introduction to Partial Differential Equations

A complete introduction to partial differential equations, this textbook provides a rigorous yet accessible guide to students in mathematics, physics and engineering. The presentation is lively and up to date, paying particular emphasis to developing an appreciation of underlying mathematical theory. Beginning with basic definitions, properties and derivations of some basic equations of mathematical physics from basic principles, the book studies first order equations, classification of second order equations, and the one-dimensional wave equation. Two chapters are devoted to the separation of variables, whilst others concentrate on a wide range of topics including elliptic theory, Green's functions, variational and numerical methods. A rich collection of worked examples and exercises accompany the text, along with a large number of illustrations and graphs to provide insight into the numerical examples. Solutions to selected exercises are included for students whilst extended solution sets are available to lecturers from solutions@cambridge.org.

Isaac Gilbert

Matthew Gilbert (d.1680) emigrated in 1637 from England to Boston, Massachusetts, and moved in 1638 to New Haven, Connecticut. Isaac Gilbert (1742-1822), a great grandson, served in an American unit of the British Army in the French and Indian War and also in the Revolutionary War. He and his family emigrated from Connecticut to Gagetown, New Brunswick in 1783. Descendants lived in New Brunswick, Ontario and elsewhere in Canada. Many descendants immigrated to Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and elsewhere in the United States.

Functional Integration

In this text, Cartier and DeWitt-Morette, using their complementary interests and expertise, successfully condense and apply the essentials of Functional Integration to a great variety of systems, showing this mathematically elusive technique to be a robust, user friendly and multipurpose tool.

Chemistry in Action: Making Molecular Movies with Ultrafast Electron Diffraction and Data Science

The thesis provides the necessary experimental and analytical tools to unambiguously observe the atomically resolved chemical reactions. A great challenge of modern science has been to directly observe atomic motions during structural transitions, and while this was first achieved through a major advance in electron source brightness, the information content was still limited and new methods for image reconstruction using femtosecond electron diffraction methods were needed. One particular challenge lay in reconciling the innumerable possible nuclear configurations with the observation of chemical reaction mechanisms that reproducibly give the same kind of chemistry for large classes of mole...
