Depression

Depressive disorders can be seen as a disturbance to the balance of mind and body. Because it is a mental disorder and psychiatry is a branch of medicine, the question how mind and body interact in depression should be treated as a medical rather than metaphysical mind-body problem. The relation between mind and body as it pertains to this illness should be construed in teleological rather than causal terms. Mental states like beliefs and emotions serve an adaptive purpose by constraining the physiologic systems involved in the body's stress response, thus preserving homeostasis and protecting us from various disorders. Depression results when the mind fails its constraining role.

Interdisciplinary Research in Diabetology

The prevalence of diabetes has alarmingly increased in both developed and developing countries in recent years. The prevalence of different complications and comorbid conditions associated with diabetes has also rampantly increased, thereby endangering the lives of patients with diabetes. In fact, obesity, which is associated with diabetes, is currently a major global public health concern. Nevertheless, it can be argued that little progress has been made in the field of the management of diabetes during the past decades, and many believe that the discovery of insulin was not followed by further significant advancements in the management of diabetes. Mental Illnesses

In the book "Mental Illnesses - Understanding, Prediction and Control" attention is devoted to the many background factors that are present in understanding public attitudes, immigration, stigma, and competencies surrounding mental illness. Various etiological and pathogenic factors, starting with adhesion molecules at one level and ending with abuse and maltreatment in childhood and youth at another level that are related to mental illness, include personality disorders that sit between mental health and illness. If we really understand the nature of mental illness then we should be able to not only predict but perhaps even to control it irrespective of the type of mental illness in question but also the degree of severity of the illness in order to allow us to predict their long-term outcome and begin to reduce its influence and costs to society. How can we integrate theory, research evidence, and specific ways to deal with mental illness? An attempt will be made in the last conclusive chapter of this volume.

It offers entirely new and unexpected view of a number of phenomena observed in experiments of contemporary physics, and not only physics. The idea of the Horizon of Cognition touches upon many other fields, but this we will leave to the discretion of the readers themselves.

Psychoeducation Manual for Bipolar Disorder

Although the mainstay of bipolar therapy is drug treatment, psychoeducation is a technique that has proven to be very effective as an add-on to medication, helping to reduce the number of all types of bipolar recurrences and hospitalisation. The object is to improve patients' understanding of the disorder and therefore their adherence to pharmacotherapy. Based on the highly successful, evidence-based Barcelona program, this book is a pragmatic, therapists' guide for how to implement psychoeducation for bipolar patients. It gives practical guidance for how to conduct a psychoeducation group, using sessions and cases drawn from the Barcelona Psychoeducation Program. Moreover, it provides the reader with a great amount of practical tips and tricks and specific techniques to maximize the benefits of bipolar psychoeducation. The authors formed the first group to show the efficacy of psychoeducation as a maintenance treatment and have a long history of performing bipolar psychoeducation.
