This booklet is about what can be read on the labels attached to the insects in a historical collection. These labels are labeled with the name of the animal, location, date of discovery and collector's name. At least that's how it's been said to have been since around 1905. This insect collection on which this is based covers the period from 1868 to 1963 and therefore also contains contemporary wit-nesses to historical events (e.g. Versaille 1919, Kherson 1942) that are no longer familiar to young people. Also included are insects from collectors with interesting résumés that are not even known to insiders, as well as expeditions and real adventure trips (Hedin, Citroen). Socially relevan...

Rove beetles (Staphylinidae) are common elements of the soil biota, living in the litter and deeper soil layers. Although they are one of the most diverse and speciose groups of insects, no comprehensive books on their general evolution and ecology are as yet available. This book fills that gap, discussing significant aspects and active research examples in the fields of phylogeny and systematics, ecology and conservation, and reproduction and development. The combination of review chapters and case studies provides an excellent introduction to the biology of rove beetles and enables readers to become familiar with active research fields in this megadiverse group of beetles. Offering easy ac...
Palaeoentomology represents the interface between two huge scientific disciplines: palaeontology – the study of fossils, and entomology – the study of insects. However, fossils rarely feature extensively in books on insects, and likewise, insects rarely feature in books about fossils. Similarly, college or university palaeontology courses rarely have an entomological component and entomology courses do not usually consider the fossil record of insects in any detail. This is not due to a lack of insect fossils. The fossil record of insects is incredibly diverse in terms of taxonomic scope, age range (Devonian to Recent), mode of preservation (amber and rock) and geographical distribution ...
